M Codes Type 3 1500 a n s?? whats the difference

Hi

My grandfather bought a notch in October 64 + gave it to me in 83 for the past 30 years it's been siting in a hayshed.

I'm keen to confirm the M Code but when I went to The Samba they had

312 1500/1500S Sedan RHD Until 7/65
316 1500N/1500A Sedan RHD 8/63 to 7/65

Is this correct??

All the other references I have seen all just have a M Code of 316??

How can I tell the difference between the 1500, 1500A, 1500N or a 1500S

I've tried to post some photos with no luck

I think the single carby model was just a 1500, the "S" had twin carbs and dome top pistons. This is from memory but a lot of time has past since.
Actually thinking about it I can't remember the fastbacks having a single carby engine.

In OZ, don't confuse European Type 3 vehicles with those put together for us here. After the initial 63? model which was a single carb 1500cc engine, the ones available here from 1964 in the Square and Notch to 1965 it was single carb with basically the exact engine from the 1963 model. In 1965 we still had the single carb plus the 1 year only Australian version 1500S (known as Twin S). This vehicle was basically the same engine again as the single carb model that most of the distributors called the 1500N. This 1500S engine had flat top pistons with the twin carbs added. That vehicle also could come with a two tone paint job.

The only 1500S engine to have the dome top pistons (8.5:1 comp ratio) was the German 1500S which was 1964-1965. That model is near as rare as hen's teeth here as very few of those were imported. They had a totally different interior and more shiny bits compared to the Australian 1500S.

In 1966 came the first 1600 engine in the Fastback which had again flat top pistons but bored to 1600cc plus twin carbs. At this point I think there were a few imports by Lanock Motors of the German built Fasback which had some different interior bits compared to the Australian assembled one.
