12v Flywheel Repair/replace

The flywheel I want to use in my new motor has some slightly damaged teeth that were making some nasty noises before I pulled the old motor out. I have had a new gear put on the starter but am wondering whether I can clean up the teeth on the flywheel with a file or am I wasting my time. Anyone done this successfully or alternatively used a Gene Berg ring gear? I would prefer not to use an aftermarket flywheel
Cheers.......Wayne
