Temperature gauge not working

Hey guys
I've just swapped my ej22 that I'd ran for 3years for an ej25.
The swap has gone well, but I had to replace the original harness with ej25 one.
My problem is that I've connected the aftermarket gauge to the temp wire and I'm getting nothing at the gauge. With the previous harness I just connected straight up to the wire and it worked. Did the ej25 have some kind of resistor somewhere or what?
Any help appreciated.
Cheers John

I drilled and taped the water log and used a VDO sender with my VDO gauge. Not sure if they use different senders in later motors but I think it could be risky trying use an aftermarket gauge with a factory sender. Can you unscrew the factory sender and fit the correct sender for your gauge?
