Gearboxes?


Hope someone can help here.
Patiance please as this is my first submission.
I run a 200# hp notch on the street. Its IRS with T2 outputs , gusseted case and superdiff.The box was built by Transform about 5 years ago.A couple months ago i hurt the box and its realy grumbling real bad. I took it out and stripped it and the bearing had spun on the diff cover, so i put a good diff cover on, reset the preload and backlash. Put it all together and its still grumbling, tho only when rolling in neutral.
While cruzing or accelerating , it drives perfect.
I think its the side gear meshing with the spiders, cos when i pushed the side gears in its notchy to turn . But when i pull the side gears out , they spin fine. I think berg says to run sidegears tight on swingaxle. There is very little info on IRS. If i need to shim all this , side and spiders. Where can i get em?

I can't help other than to suggest you call Lawrie Spencen at German Auto's in Brisbane. I've just sent an IRS box up to him to totally overhaul and put in a 0.82 4th gear.

He comes across a little abrupt, but really knows his stuff. He does heaps of off-road tranys I think. He came recommended by 2 VW experts (one an engine builder & racer, the other a mechanic and ex drag racer).

I had a buit transform tranny, and I blew it up too. I sent that tranny to KCR transmissions in southern California, and the main guy there said that transform uses substandard parts in all there trannies. You should have the tranny gone over before you break down for good.

Thanx boys. I will give the man a call.
On the substandard parts. U could be right or wrong? Looking at the bits i pulled out of my box. Some were obviously old , like the diff bearings, which prob. isnt a bad thing. Thou the diff had no oil holes drilled in it so it was a bit flogged out. I had to hammer the long sidegear out! The side gears and spiders were new however , i reckon? I called Transform and they were absolutely no help. Californians ! Man some of em. We must speak a different language.

Yes, they do speak a different language! If you've blown the bearing badly enough to need a new side cover, it's probably produced some uneven wear - tolerances are set really accurately in a tranny for good reason. Let me know how this Svenson guy is - I'm looking for someone local to rebuild a tranny in the future. Scandanadian (or Prussian) types can seem a bit "abrupt" to aussies, but it's just a cultural thing and they're often great mechanics.
