MANX HELP - Calling all offroaders
OK, i have decided to build a manx from scratch.. now i know that there are a few manx mad guys who use this forum so i am asking for whatever help
you can give.. if anyone could answer the following questions in no particular order i would be a very happy dubber.
Is the MANX compliant in QLD? do i need to have an engineer inspect it, if so at what stages?
Where is the best place to get Meyers MANX shells.. bearing in mind i want it to be as simple to make compliant as possible. I am not dead set on a
meyers but i do like the look of brads.. and i think that is a meyers i could be very wrong though
Where can i get the welding diagrams for the reinforcing and frame.. what problems have you guys run in to that maybe i can skip..
Am i likely to run into problems if i do wes's ride height adjuster mod? is this illegal? does not sound super legal..
What is the largest capacity engine i can legally put into the MANX? (2.1L ?)
Thats all the questions sorry about the long post hope someone can help me.. and yes if the MANX club guys want me to join i will as soon as she is
near completion ( just before they ask :P )

Brad would be the man to talk to, he's pretty clued up on the legal mumbo, easiest way is to buy one already legally on the road and do a
rebuild, ends up alot less stressfull and more likely cheaper too!
Welcome to the crazy luv of buggies!!

Do yourself a favour come down to Brad's place for the BBQ this weekend(Manx Club Meeting), you can ask people there who have been through this
process.
My Humble opinion is buy a Manx with Papers......All the mods are already approved.
Just so happens there are a couple for sale at the moment
Cheers

out of my normal areas of play.
But my 2c - a week or 3 ago there were about 4 really nice Manx's ( well buggies at least) for sale, for around the $8k mark.
Having watched the V Force boys build a show winner a year ago ( a rock hopper?? or some thing like that ) $8k is cheap.
Just buy one of them and respray it

Mmm buggy questions !!!
Ok,
Answers in no particular order..
Current rules in QLD allow you to build a Meyers Manx Buggy which is built on a shortened beetle floor pan BUT it constitutes a new motor vehicle.
Thsi means you need to comply with ALL current ADR's. There is two ways to get around this.
1- Buy and build a LWB buggy such as a sharpbuilt or Max FX ( http://www.sharpbuilt.com.au or http://www.beachbuggy.com.au ) If you like the look they are better than a Manx as you can have a rear seat and take more
than a tooth brush camping
2- Buy an old manx with papers and rebuild it.
Adjusters in the front beam are legal in QLD so there is no problems with them. rear adjusters are legal also.
Largest engine in a pre approved Manx is teh same as a beetle which is around 2.0L Turbo or 2.5 N/A.
If you are fair dinkum about building one and want plans etc etc you shoudl really join the Manx Club. That way I will give you a heap of stuff that
non members have to pay for and funnily enough it will cost you around the same as membership without any of the benifits.
If you want more info then give me a call, my number is in thge yellow pages under Car Clubs.... Manx Club
Oh did I mention they are addictive and will take over your yard and shed

I have an adjuster mod?!? :o
If your just talking adjusters, then Brad is correct in that they are legal :thumb . Here is an extract from the NSW rules which are basically the QLD
rules;
Generally, roll stabilizer bars, axle locating rods, upgraded shock
absorbers or upgraded springs may be used provided they are suitable for the vehicle and are properly
fitted. However, the following suspension modifications are not acceptable:
a) welding forged components such as stub axles or control arms;
b) fitting longer, non-standard shackles to leaf springs; and
c) fitting any additional components or altering the suspension so that the wheels or tyres may contact
any component under the full range of suspension and steering travel.
d) fitting any additional components or altering the suspension ride height so that any part of the
vehicle other than a wheel or tyre can contact the road in the event of a tyre deflation.
So basically don't go cutting and welding the arms or stub axles and your fine. Fitting adjusters is basically an owner certified modification.
You should ensure it is welded correctly and you will be fine. I would consider it an upgraded spring modification, which it says is legal and
doesn't require certification.

Anything that is on offroadvw.net and doesn't get painted at the end of the job is probably Brad's doing
He wrote that article. That's why it has brad@offroadvw.net as the contact on the bottom of the page. :P
Simple mistake I guess :thumb

Hi Fuz.
I notice origanaly you were interested in building a manx and now you are looking at a Gs Limo. I think thye are a good item but have you considered
building a Max Fx the same as Mic and Min`s. They are closer looking to the manx style if that is what you were after and give you all the benifits of
a lwb... and of course teh disadvantages I guess
If you are interested in one have a look at their site at http://www.beachbuggy.com.au. Tell em Andrew sent ya and you should get a good deal

i just spoke to John from max fx and he said that the max fx (providing you build it to their specs) it meets ADRs, however it has not actually been
crash tested because it is an ICV (individually constructed vehicle) and has dispensation papers on the vehicle that state NOT CRASH TESTED..
ADR 69 - Full Frontal Impact Occupant Protection
ADR 72 - Dynamic Side Impact Occupant Protection
if its passed all the ADRs then how does it meet these two? does the ICV make it exempt? what process do i have to go through to pass this? do i need
an engineer to rubber stamp my barwork? or do i just need to have BBA build the barwork with their certs?
HELP!

Not 100% about ADRs but i belive because it has the icv it is exempt. Yes you need the old rubber stamp for the bar work but No you do not have to buy
theirs. Basically once it is finished you get the engineer to give it the once over and providing all is above board it is all sweet. Have a look
through at the build up of mic and mins as it gives you a good idea of how they go together. Do not be ffraid to ask the guys at BBA any questions you
have as they will let you know what is what. Graham is good to ask about the ADR stuff.. If you want talk to Custum Off Road about bar work and
engineers reports. |
