fresh vinyl

hey guys, just starting to re-upolster the bus, getting my grandfather to make new seat covers (he is an ex fletcher jones tailor) and was wondering where is a good place to get vinyl from? i have gotten a quote for $23 per metre for black UV treated. is this a good price?

leather comes in hides tho (not on rolls) which means u usually have to buy more to do the same job because of the odd sizes of the skins. tempting thought tho...

The prices sounds pretty cheap to me. Go for it. I would add a cloth insert section on the cushion and squab faces much nicer to sit on then the Vinyl.

already got the cloth, basically copying the original upolstery on the seats (buckets out of an RX3), grandfather doing the work also managed to supply suede look cloth for the center of the seats. oh yeah, and aircon's in the pipeline too!

$23/m for Vinyl is pretty steep. Try Vyfab (or something like that) in Moorabbin

make sure you got auto vinyl not the cheap shit at spotlight, and you get what you pay for, the $10 stuff will look like $10 stuff, just passing on sum advice given to ,me

oh and make sure the sewing is done properly, close fine stitching will tend to weaken the material around where it is sewn from and therefore rip easier

cheers

kg60, ur right, they do look basically identical (the higher quality one may have a better knit on the back side of the fabric). UV proof is much more expensive then basic stuff and is 100% necessary for doing seats and any other area in direct sunlight. all the stitching will be done by a pro (my grandfather, head fletcher jones tailor in warrnambool in his day) to the exact specs of the original, so no problems with stitching.
thanks for all the replies guys.
