"engine-in" problems


Despite having done this dozens of times I cannot get this 1600TP back in my ghia.
I've had the evergreen problems of the crank pulley hooked under the rear lip & the R/H heater box stuck in the top corner.
I've removed the gen & manifold to get a bit more room.
I've got both bottom mounting bolts in & yes the mainshaft is in the hole but I can't push it in the last 40mm. It seems to be stuck on the mainshaft because I can rock & sway the eng on its central axis. Yes I know about rotating the pulley to line up the splines.
Any ideas?
I'm nearly ready to use a length of three-eigths all-thread to pull it in!

is the clutch plate aligned?
if the isnt aligned properly it makes it difficult to get it in.

You sound like you know what you're doing, but when I was putting my engine in I was told to select top gear in an attempt to stop/restrict the main shaft spinning.

Flywheel locks are devices that bolt onto the case (using either one of the two lower engine mount studs, or a separate bolt through one of the top mounting holes)...they mesh with the flywheel ring gear (teeth) and stops it from spinning when you torque up the gland nut that holds the flywheel on type I engines.

Sleepless night


I own 2 flywheel locks & I got them both on dismantling engines i have bought- a pleasant surprise. Also a couple of 17mm sockets left on the top mounts! Yes clutch is alligned & engine is locked in gear. The only thing that came to me one night is that I adjusted the new clutch cable right up tight to stop it falling off at the pedal end while I installed it- my better half refused to help hold it under tension so I had to improvise. I may be trying to depress the clutch pressure plate as I install the engine. Can't check it out till the weekend- will keep you posted.

a swingaxle colleted pressure plate won't go in an IRS gearbox with the throw-out guide tube either. Just another thing to check.

Gearbox


Thank you Wes but it's a 1500 non-IRS trans. I would have been quite happy with a 1200 engine but the flywheel was too narrow for the opening hence the 1600 went in.

Seriously....


I ran it with the 36hp for about 3 months but the starter didn't mesh- it worked by friction drive! The noise drive me crazy! (And scared the crap out of admiring onlookers)

yeah last time i couldnt get it completely all the way, only about 5mm to go. I already had the car in gear handbrake on, i turned over the engine and yep, the shaft was aligned.

So i just tightened up the bolts and that was that.
strange seeing every other time i was able to push it all the way in.

you could use the 1200, you just have to use a 6V starter. To do that you'd need a special 12-6V adaptor bush for the gearbox. Should be able to buy one or easily get one made / make one.

HOORAY!


The bugger is in! The problem was the clutch - I was trying to depress the pressure plate because I had it adjusted all the way till the thread ran out. Why? Because I installed a new clutch cable solo ie with no one tugging at the transmission end to hold it on the hook. I managed to do it by using one of the mounting screws on the dipper switch and a long cable tie to hold the clutch pedal fully depressed while I angled the pedal cluster in & wound the adjustment as far as I could at the other end. Then I forgot about it. Oh well all part of the rich tapestry blah blah etc
