engine lids - different types?
hey people, what kind of different engine lids are there throughout the beetles?
and what are they worth?
I have heard of W decklids, and that they arent too common?
any pics to help would be great.
reason being, at the wreckers today, found a beetle with the engine lid creased right across about 6 inches from the top, and it was a different style
to the smooth lid on Dani's 69. it had a raised section in the middle, hard to explain.
just thought it may be a rare/valuable decklid for someone with a bit of panel-beating skill.
also now I'm looking for VW parts around, it would be nice to know if I spot a bargain, as I know if someone offers me a genuine RX-3 for $1000
grab it, but I wouldnt know if a 1960 beetle in close to original condition would be worth $100 or $5000 (see I have no idea, is a 1960 special or
just a common thing) |

engine lids
ok i can help here with some pics:
1. the W shaped lids, found on splits and Ovals/late 50s beetles. the earlier models had a different licence beak commonly called the popes nose. the
rarest lids.
2. early 60s lid, notice the licence beak is different to the next one.
3. 65 onwards till 69 i think. it totally changed after this to the bulbous type of the 70s i think.
4. not sure wat comes next, but heres something from the 70s, im sure they r very comomon. im not very familiar with later VWs sorry...

Great pics Sam... theres another one as well the same as the last pic which has 4 louvers.
Also the early ones which were from Cabrios had vents in them of course these are twice the price as the stock ones if you can find them,

thanks a heap.
thanbks for the pics, I managed cto spot the lid there 
its not actually a W-lid sorry guys, but it is the same as the second pic. looks like it has been caught under the top edge of the engine bay and
opened, as it has a nice crease all the way across.
if its somewhat rare, and there are any keen panelbeaters in SA... |

Our 70 Beetle has one like the last one pictured, but with no vents in it, just smooth.
