Yes Jen very hard to find, the old paint producers use to put out a new page each year, it had a small colour chip for each make of vehicle.
Have a look at you local paint n panel shop they may have the old books laying around.

I've been a bit worried about the colour reproduction in VW books and online...I've only been given new colours to look at from the workshop
Bel is at but they do the old VW colours if I get the code I want...
Dave is there a blue that is a bit more mauve than Gulf Blue?....In the books the colour I like has a hint of mauve...but then the Gulf Blue looks the
same when I put them together...
Saw a very nice Gulf Blue beetle at Volkscare yesterday

Dont know about a bit more Mauve
Your better off looking at the new paint chips a the panel shop they can mix any colour you want just keep the formular in case you have to touch it
up.
It wont be a genuine VW colour but thats not what you want anyway.

So are you trying to go 100% restoration ??? including all the trimmings !!!
good on you if you are. Bloody hard nowdays but go for it Sam.
Have a look at Jens web page its a pretty good guide
In the early days there was only 5 or 6 colours for each year
