What VW do I have?

I hope someone can help. My wife has always wanted a VW chop top and I finally got her one.

She has some rust in the rear floor pan (the car that is) that we can deal with but I am a complete ignoramus on things Dub.

Can anyone help? The paperwork says 1600cc but the badge is 1500 on the back. It has a fibreglass body kit of some sort, flared guards, running board, front & rear bumpers but no whale tail.

Engine # F0675180, VIN# 1102790234, manufactured (I'm told) August 1970, Solex30 Pict 2 Carby, rear drum, front disk. Last rego was a D Griffin, Mt. Barker, SA, VVD-594.

Anyone know the history of this car, or the previous owner? We got it from Collectable Classics on South Rd Adel. Is it 1500 or 1600, how can you tell?

Pics enc. (If I can do it right)

Help!

I dont know how close I'm going to be here but here goes....
My Conv is a '68 and Engine No is FO583489 which the guys on here tell me is a 1300 -so it's not the original one- as yours starts with the same FO prefix it's probably the same.
Your VIN is a worry, mine is 118997207, but yours has one more digit!!

How much did you pay for it?

Interesting VIN!

The VIN we have is stamped in two places. On the floorpan under the rear seat in the middle and in the front behind the spare wheel. Both look (to me anyway) to be original stamps.

The other worrying thing is the rego docs say 1600cc but the back badge says 1500 (just a badge I suppose) but you think it is a 1300???

Is there anywhere Engine numbers are listed correlating to size in VW production???

Anyone else got any ideas?

F0675,180 engine was made in 1966
F means its a 1300cc engine
The solex PICT 30-2 started being used in 1968...
Chassis number is for a car built between
1st August 1969 to 31st July 1970.
which was the 1970 year model...
#1102-000-001 to #1103-100-000
Looks like someone has replaced the engine with an early 1300...
it should be a single port engine....
with a 1968 Carburettor, although that carby was used on the 1500 engine until
the dual port 1600 engine arrived in 1971.
The carby is probably from the original engine, which would have been a 1500.
cheers

Where did you get all that!!!

Strewth, what a mishmash of a car! Pieces from all over the place.

Your mood may be mentaly ill but you have helped heaps 68autobug. It is going to take me ages to digest all that as none was really expected, especially the engine being 1300 and not 1600 as we were told (and as what is written on the rego papers and sales papers). What can we do about it now? Nothing I suspect but I will be bloody well more carefull next time I deal with that VW business in Adelaide again. Bugger that, I WON'T go back to them.

Thanks again 68.

Probably is a 1600, it's easy enough to swap barrels/pistons, you can onlt tell if you take off a head and measure the bore diameter. The 'Complete Idiot" book has a good section on chassis/engine number identification.

the book to which magentabug is refering too is called "how to keep your volkswagen alive" look for it on http://www.amazon.com  its a great book. usually cars that have been modifyed like baja bugs or bugs with carrera kits like yours etc are a bit of a mismatch. it prolly is a 1300 case with 1600 barrels and pistons. if you know anyone who has a 1300 bug get them to have a quick drive and ask them whether its more or less powerful or about the same to get a fair idea of the engine size or take it to a dyno. if its a 1600 single port it would make about 55 horsepower???? i think a twin port 1600 with a 34pict carb makes 65bhp. short of that pull the heads of an measure the bore. as mentioned before.

The Beetle book for the compleat idiot by the late John Muir,
is held in high esteem by many people...
there is one going very cheap on ebay [au] at the moment..
Maybe 1600cc cylinders and heads have been installed...
so it may end up being a 1600cc engine...
Best of Luck

this car is a 1600 the deck lid is different because it 'had' a whale tail, and was swapped out for a stock one..

just because its a kit car... doesnt mean its not a vw!
