i have a 56 that doesnt use a bushing in it. Instead the hole is kind of rounded and a tab comes off the back and puts pressure on it. It looks like the ones that are in early barndoor busses, only it has a longer pressure tab. Stick you finger in there and feel around. if the hole it flared then you dont need to bush it. just clean up the rod and grease it a little bit. I rebent the little pressure tab, but I did it after I cut it out. lol wich I dont recomend.

Yes confirming Scott

we didnt get gear shift rod bushes until 68, prior to this the metal was flared out to form a metalic type of bush.

Put some heavy grease of the gear rod if you undo it from the coupling at the rear and slide it forwards slightly until you see the wear marks on the shaft

hit this area with heavy wheel bearing grease and slide it back into place.

thank you guys

I was asking the question because i was told that all bugs have the bush but when i took mine apart there was none and no sign of any old parts of a bush in the tunnel.

I brought one and fitted it and thought theres no way that the rod was going to fit through it so went ahead and refitted with plently of grease all seemed to work really well but i didn't want to go any further as i wanted to be sure.

Thanks guys
