I could have used either of these on Monday.... got stuck chasing goats alongside the road (its a long story). The point is, I could have walked out of this no probs if I'd had a locker or LSD fitted....

How available are the side shift 091's with the locker???? Why not just use one of these and convert it to a "normal" shift??:)

No I sold the gear off due to
time
$
I dont think any one would pay for it any way .

The air locker has lots of problems its in the O ring seals , diff temp goes up > air leaks out the diff breather , have seen them all and repared most of them .
I still working on the HSV holden one , so if you see one stolen in the bush , go your own way , if you get my drift ;)

I have done some work on this subject but due to two of my projects needing finishing have placed it on the back burner .My next project will require this set up so I will post it here when I have some work in progress shots .
Keep your eyes out for a 215kw holden parked on the side of the road !

.The unit when made is two halfs ( wave plates ) with the slides placed in the center then the uint is welded together with a tig , it filled with a high temp grease then sealed with a small bearing .

The problem is when the ( bearing thrust washer ) wears .The fine fragments have no where to go .The slides then are pushed into the center and do not drive ( lock ) each wheel .This then calls for the car to drive only one wheel or two as it may slip and find lock for a second then back to one wheel .
I have made a cutter for the lathe as to open the center , when I did the fist one I thought the center was filled with a coppy type grease ! then found it was small particals of the thrust washer .
I am going to see if I can get some thust washes made so I can repair the center , then return it to service in a VW diff .

The unit is over $1000.00 new or you may find one in a bin at a diff place like I did the other day .

if you manage to get some washers, ls there a way you can modify the LSD so this won't shorten the life of it again?

Cheers

I would say no , it needs to be cut open for repair each time .

After looking at this tonight I will not follow doing any mods to make it fit the vw diff .
