1964 type 3 box/gear suitable for splitty straight axle conversion?
I have the opportunity to buy a type 3 sedan (is this a notchback?) which I would use as for donor parts to straight axle my 63 splitty.
Is the gearbox good for the job or should I wait til I find a 67/68 type 3 box, or 68 beetle gearbox (both of which I read are ideal)?
And apart from the gearbox and axles, is there anything else I should nab (brakes, etc) that would enhance my splitty before I put the remains up for
sale here?
ps. the body sounds like it might be pretty good...

I think the suitable 68 beetle box is 1500... don't know about the type 3s...

Also, the engine is 1600... will a 1500 box fit?

Ideally,
What you think you're looking for is a box with a 4.125 R&P. Not sure if the early type 3s had a R&P geared this high.
That said, a 1500 or 1600 pushing a 4.125 R&P tranny
without reduction boxes in a bus is probably just about at
the edge of its performance envelope. Just OK top speed/power
on the flat, an absolute drag on the hills....
Note that you don't have to spring for ANY of this stuff if you
have the small nut reduction boxes (63 is the changeover year so you may may not). Small nut bus drums take the smaller diameter 'long' beetle
axle.
So you can put in long beetle axles, lengthen the axle tubes
and use the drums and stuff you have (you do have to get a bit machined off the drum snout).
You can flip the R&P in your existing box (or you'll end
up with 4 reverse gears when you remove the reduction boxes) and off you go. Low budget straightaxle!
Note the
exisiting box ISN'T a 4.125 but you'll see a sig difference
in top speed and noise just
by getting rid of the reduction boxes. ....actually well suited to a 1500 or 1600 in a bus.

Ok, Thanks SplitbusOZ
It does have small nut reduction boxes (and five studs if that's relevant)...
So I'll keep the brakes just need a new box (the current one is pretty much stuffed which is why I'm doing the conversion in the first place - just
thought I might be better off getting later and more available gearbox cos I haven't had any luck trying to find a good splitty box) so I'll look
for a 68 beetle box and lengthen the axle tubes, right?
Also thinking about getting pmgbus adapter plates cos I'm not too sure abotu cutting and welding cos I wouldn't want them to break... reckon the
adapter plates will be stronger...
