hmmm.....poor nick is copping it now!!!! wish you'd never said that you had no lesons huh?

but yes...we all did silly things in our youth.....i drove my auto golf for nearly 2 years WITHOUT A LICENSE when i was nicks age....oh dear. needless to say i was VERY CAREFUL but my mind boggles at the trouble i could have got myself into......let alone the insurance.......jezuz. then i finally got my auto license and got a passat, then for some random reason but a freaking laser, which was manual. i proceeded to drive that for a year without a license (and i remember a good 6 weeks of clunking gears before i finally got the hang of a manual)

sigh.

needless to say i am still alive............but silly driving was the least of my worries...i did lots of stupid shit when i was a youngster.....

BUT, as i was saying to nick in my post before - he is in the prime age group to DIE. for all of these kinda reasons, young guys tend to do crazy stuff with their cars, alcohol, get in fights, get invovled in all kinds of risk-taking behaviours.

BUT there are plenty of people out there ---- ALL AGES, ALL GENDERS, ALL NATIONALITIES - who are total crap drivers and MAKE ME SCARED TO BE ON THE ROADS.

BUT having met Nick, though no i havent seen him drive, he strikes me as a fairly sensible young lad!

AND , i may be biased in saying this (and it probably doesnt apply to all of us) but as a VW driver, i think i have been a fairly cautious/considerate/safe driver all along - due to a combination of 1. love for my car and fear of damaging it 2. the sheer piss-weakness of the vw engine 3. arrogence of other new-car-drivers attitiude/road rage to older, slower cars

hmmmm.....maybe i am digging myself a hole by posting this ---- but yeah i do share the horror of "oh my god he's never ahd a lesson" but there are plenty of ppl out there who had 50 lessons and are still crap and yes they passed their test too. BUt some ppl are naturally adept at driving (it is a skill some people can pick up very easliy) and in the case of the young dubbers on this forum, i reckon most of them have been into cars for long enough to know a fair bit about how to drive.how an engine works/road rules/ fear of breaking their "baby" beloved vw.

ANYWAY --- there is my rant.

and i agree andy - we should all do defensive driver courses - i would love to ---but have you seen how much they cost???????????? and why there isn't some free "refresher course" or defensive driving course that is compulsory when ppl renew their license every 10 years is beyond me ---- road rules change, traffic rules change, people skills/knowledge detirioate, urban sprawl/increasing relience on cars has meant a greater number of ppl drive daily and has increased road rage and the like ----- people should be given an oppurtunity to refresh their skills (without fear of being fined or their licences taken away....)

ANYWAY!!!! thats my 2 cents, and as a ex-young-dodgy-driver i rekon Nick is ok!!! and i still say congrats to you my dear --- but always keep in mind that human bodies weren't designed to travel at the speed of your baja......so play it safe my sweet cause if you die before we get to race at Valla i will kill you!!!!!!!!!!!!! heheheheheh.

I remember the time, I went sideways through the trees blocking the whole road, in the wet at oriellys guest house. And the time I spun the olf flacon (this was while I was saving for the VW) off the raod and into a garden bed while trying to impress a girl, and the time ........... and the time............., But I have survived!!!!!!

I have no sympathy for my car, only the wallet that pays for it!

oriellys.....awesome place.......really windy dangerous road at highspeed.......well ive been driving for a while now and ive had my superbug sideways in the dirt many times but i dont drive like a dickhead on the road........as for defensive driving courses well thats great and id love to do one but as thorun said they cost money that i dont have......i dont drive my car to the extreme in fact i leave 10 minutes earlier for work then when i was driving our subaru just so i can take it easy.......i may have had no lessons but i can still drive quite well and i know the limitations of the car.
