depends on the item value. I think taxes start if the package is over $1000 AUD.

moral of the story is if you get the phone call from customs, tell them without hesitation that all the parts are for a race car.

nothing else has any possible negotiability.

oh apart from the airfreight, some places will do sea freight

that said, i have heard many stories of people bringing in smaller packages and them arriving on their doorstep with no calls from customs, no taxes or duties.

luck of the draw i guess

this was only 6-8 weeks ago.

hope that all makes sense.

If it gets posted and the total with freight costs is over $500AUD then Aust Post hold onto it at the PO until you hand over the extorsion money cash only then they pay customs,NEVER GET AIRFREIGHT FROM USA,just order the crap you want and forgetabout it then 10-12 weeks later yule get the knockon the door.:)

Contact the DepartmentTransport and Regional Services (DOTARS) in Canberra.. They have a website.. They will send you a booklet about all the import requirements for vehicles..
Beside cost, you MUST apply for and have an import permit before you bring the vehicle in.. It is too late to apply once it's on the wharf..
I can dig up further information (I have the DOTARS contact number somewhere) if you have no luck..

Don't rush into it mate.. Get the paperwork right first and you should have no problem..

I know that over here it goes on the value of the parcel. I just had some stuff imported and while one box came to my door, the other was held in customs, there was only a $50 difference in their value but it was enough to get stopped.
I think (as empi man has already said) if you're going to be importing a car you should talk to a customs broker, or some importing places to get all the info. Shop around too cause prices can vary a lot.

Good luck.

What are you going to be importing?

And I believe all the taxes are worked on what THEY think the value of the item is not what is declared. I just bought some stuff from the US for US$400 (AUD$560) but tax was worked on value of AUD$800. I asked but they won't listen :puke

im not sure. but isnt there something about the vehicle being a vintage, ie more than 30 yrs old, that you dont pay a tax on? and ive also heard of people who bring in cars, and they have it packed full of 'old' parts. again something to do with age and stuff.

In Unique Cars magazine, I have read of companies in Australia who have a contact in the USA , and they do everything, like inspect the vehicle etc... make sure the vehicle isn't damaged and packed safely into container etc....
I don't know what they would charge...

What Frenzix says about it being random is right.I had stuff sent to be from the UK and it went to the local post office sorting thingo which was a shed in an industrial area. They sent me a card in the mail to ring them that my goods had arrived. They wanted 10% GST and shit loads of import duty. When I disputed the import duty they halfed it.Told them it was for a van over 30 years old.Even though it was new gear.I have a friend who had the package that he ordered overseas delivered to the door with no GST and no import duty.Might be something to do with September 11th and white powder in the mail?

Ok there are some misconceptions here.
If your import is over 30 years old then no tarrif however , you pay GST on INVOICED cost and Shipping cost. So If the invoice SAYS $1000 and it cost $275 to get it here and its over 30 years OR PARTS FOR OVER 30 Year old vehicle then you would pay %10 of the total , in this case, $127.50 plus an admin fee $20, just need to fill out some Private import forms not hard dont get forwarding agent its easy.
If your import is a car and less than 30 Years Old you pay
%15 tarrif on the $1000 so $150 add this to the car and shipping so $1425 then %10 GST $142.50 .
See DOTARS . They use the invoice cost as long as its remotely believable. Items less than $1000 are much simpler , no import forms, just pay when it gets to PO and often they are not taxed at all ( but should be) .
Hope this helps.

I have had stuff from the States and the UK. I just tell the other end to pop them in the mail I'll pay extra for postage. these have been smaller parcels with the biggest Splitty rubbers from the Uk which came in a large padded style post pak. If the items dont draw attention then the post could be the best

What if you got the senders, to wrap it like a large present. Would that attract a Duty?

Its probably because You live on an Island - a small island...
Where We all live on a Very Large Island...

Isn't Bribie Island where ALL the millionaires live??

or was that - where all the people who live there
want to be millionaires.... -- maybe that was it..!!

Wayne I has a set of Fuchs sent in pairs from the states wrapped in Christmas Paper and with a card . No tax on that one!
Mitchell:thumb
Yes it is a bit like the luck of the draw.
Those import quotes look the real deal, they dont include any taxes on this end which are like I said, tarrif (if applicable) %5 on purchace of vehicle then %10 on top of that total after you add it to shipping.
So the GST component covers car cost plus tarrif plus shipping cost. add%10 GST. thats the sum of it.
Mitchell
