Will not fit IRS.

What are you trying to achieve, a change of gearing or ground clearance ?

and I assume your beetle is IRS now?

Use a Kombi gearbox with Kombi CV's and raise your suspension, this will be the best and easiest way to acheive what you're after.

If its a swing axle, then you can fit the reduction gearbox like the Country buggy has.................easy.(early Kombi)

prone to rolling???

not really, if anything only slightly more than std swinger as its a bit higher and due to lower ratio, a bit more respoinsive.

lower ratio aprarently orig made so WW2 kubels could idle at marching speed. i dunno.

use good shoks as with a "good" motor, torque reaction lifts susp and can cause bad susp hop poss leading to bent spring plates....

althou there are some v good ones, this pik should put everyone off beetle utes.

should be enough lift with red boxes alone. btw, just read whole of post.. you know red boxes are swing axle only not double jointed axle???

for the front. if ball joint, best get 181 stuff (through Bugy Brad??). if link & king pin, await final installment from godzilla, splitbusaustralia & buggy brad...... was it BJ who's looking at recasting country buggy spindles and carriers??

With tyres, the same answer as always, you can fit as big tyres as you want that dont rub on the pan, susp or body or else.....

Fitting a reduction box rear from a Splitty into a swing axel bug is possible, however it does have its problems (as mentioned above - suspension lifting under power, can cause bigger problems off road).

My brother attempted to replicate the CB rear by fitting a Splitty rear into his Baja. It went in with a few custom manufactured brackets on the spring plates - the Kombi rear is slightly wider than a bug - and it drove OK as long as you were gentle on the throttle. Sudden application of power would cause the back of the car to lift a couple of INCHES(!) at any speed (we tried it right up to 100km/h) Looked funny, but not really practical. We were planning on trying different things to reduce the amount of lift, until my Brother buckled a springplate whilst climbing a steep rocky track and came very close to rolling the car (at least 2 wheels off the ground! ). The decision was made at this point to return to a standard swing axel rear and just put bigger tyres for more ground clearance. Works much better.

It may be obvoius, but the reduction box rears also cause the engine to rev much harder to achieve the same speed. This could be rectified by changing the gearbox ratios, but.....

Only a couple of days after the spring plate buckled, we spoke to an owner of a CB who was looking for a springplate to suit as he had done exactly the same thing to the CB - so the factory set-up suffers from the same problem.
