Who can build my gear box?????

Just wondering who all you guys believe is the best gear box builder. I would prefer in the brisbane area but any where in Aus will do as i want it done once and once only and if for some reason something goes wrong who is known for their after sales service as well????
Oh it will be a 2L box with diff lock and some albins gears or similar depending on ratios compared to where my engine torque is. For a LWB buggy.
Cheers
Andy

In Brisbane I know of only German Autos and Phenoix Engineering. I had my GB built by Lawrence at German Autos but unfortunately haven't had a chance to actually get any road time on it (although I think Dasdubber went same route and has actually used his). I think best bet would be to ask the drag racers, 'cause if it holds up under those conditions, it will probably last in street driving. I actually bought a set of transaxle tools (along with the Long Ent. transaxle builders CD and Bentley manual) and will be building my own swing axle box (superdiff, 3.88 R&P etc.) in the coming months. About time it stopped being a black art I think.

Lawrence Svensen at German Autos was recommended to me by several people.

He has done/does tranny work for Stan Pobjoy, and a lot of off road buggy stuff.

I think Leons would be the go. I just built my own 2L box with all new bearings, syncros and Albins 3rd and 4th. Just too fussy to trust anyone else to build it. Good Luck!!

hey Dave did you have to buy any special tools or can you make do with general mechanics stuff. i would like to do it myself as i do all my own V8 Manual boxes and Engines. What book did you use for all your tolerances and torque settings.

I actually made a few tools that you need such as pinion nut socket, tool for adjusting rings, lots of different diameter steel sleeves for pressing in and out bearings.

You also need a dial indicator- actually I used two types of dial indicators. I also used digital readout on a lathe to take a measurement from the pinion face to the mounting face on the double tapered roller brg. (pinion bearing) You need to take this measurement before removing old pinion bearing and replacing with new one and also after you replaced it.

This is to ensure that the pinion depth in the case is in the same setting as from the factory. ( Will only work if you keep the original shims for the pinion bearing)

Also need a scrap gearbox case to make a jig for adjusting the shift forks.

I used the Bentley manual for the settings- well worth the initial cost.

Mate, hope I have not put you off too much but it is a bit of work without access to the right tools.

Good luck!!

Well making sleaves etc is no probs as i have my own lathe etc so I think I will get a quote on the bits for the gear box and then one on a full rebuild by them and see the difference/ I think that will be the deciding factor. Thanks for the info.

Andy,

Drive Line Services have just been looking over a 2.0l Gearbox for me(still playing with the Locker idea). They are very easy to deal with and work on alot of V8 touring cars, so I'm guessing their work is good.
