OK - here is a suggestion

Choke / air leak

When cold the butterfly is "masking" a leak or is just not coming off properly.

Check first to see if it is fully opening after a while.

Butterfly/choke should be closed when cold and opens as the elctric element heats up.

When you first pull the throttle cable the butterfly should go closed.
If it is staying open when cold and the car runs GREAT then this is your problem.
Coz when the car warms up it will want more air

Yes - this is a recomendation of John Muir.

Have a good read of Aussiebug's site here

http://www.geocities.com/vwresource/automatic_choke.html

What seems wrong is that fact you are saying it runs great cold. If the car ran like a pig till it warmed up then i would say that is normal.

Sounds like you are running terribly rich - which is like a choke when cold but running like a pig when hot??

Does this sound like your problem??

Can you swap carbs and see how it goes??

no i dont have carbs to swap. they are now on dearly departed neville..

wondered about rich or not. would flooding cause this? as it seems that scarlett is starving for fuel!

got told maybe condensor leads or coil???
