generator

OK.

Firstly an assumption. the gererator light is the one on the left. it is orange ish (the one on the right never comes on oil? so I don't know that it is green...)

OK, the gen light comes on when I turn on the ignition, but goes off when it starts (and when it was not idlingproperly it would flicker)
However, the voltage accross the battery doesn't change with the engine on or off (ie 6.14 V)

What does the gen light actually measure, and where should I go looking? I suspect the generator or regulator, but shouldn't the light be on all the time then?

Not knowing beetles very well I cann't confirm which is the gen light or what colour it is, although the one which flickered during poor idle is probably it. I assume your car is a 6V. As far as I know, all the light "measures" is whether the voltage regulator is sending current to the battery or not. ie light on - no charge, light off - battery charging. The regulator only sends current to the battery when the voltage output of the generator reaches a certain level check your manual for this voltage (or somebody can post it)

When you measured voltage across the battery, did you rev the engine? The voltage should increase with revs, if not you may have a problem with your generator or regulator. Are you experiencing problems with flat batteries?

The light comes on when you turn the key as a kind of test to make sure the bulb is working, if it didn't you may never know that the bulb has blown.

OK, I seem to have sorted this out. Don't know about the lights yet, but I cleaned the comunicator (the thing under the brushes...) Unfortunatly I didn't measure the voltage at high revs across the battery before going to work. Oh well. i got a new battery and the battery guy (who said he was a mechanic....) measured the volts at idle, and said it was bad. Later I did it at revs, and it showed 7.5 ish.

so, either it was just a bad battery, the comunicator clean helped, or I just should have measured at revs.

i will see if it keeps going over the next couple of weeks
(problem was not having enough t o turn over the engine)
