Does a larger engine mean bodywork?

Hi all,

I am currently pondering the purchase of a 1600 engine to go into my '60 bug (6v 1200). Not being mechanically minded yet, I've heard that I will probably need to modify my engine lid to accomodate the higher / taller / bigger generator?

Can anyone confirm or deny this? I've heard you end up with a big bump (or worse) on the back. Help! Anyone with pictures?

There are no body modifications but you will need to clearance the transmission (if it is a 1200 one) to fit the larger flywheel of the 1600, you will also need a 12v starter and a conversion bushing (this fits in the tranny and u just tap out the old one and put the new one in).

The engine might be a bit starved of air for cooling with the early decklid (which has no slots) as the late engines have larger fans and make more heat.

Its a pretty easy job, but time consuming because you have to clearance the transmission bellhousing.
