Help needed with handbrake boot

I am trying to fit the rubber boot over the handbrake in my 68 beetle and it doesn't seem to fit. When I push the levers through the slots in the side of the boot, the slots start to tear when I lower the levers.

What am I doing wrong? Any suggestions?

yes thay are a bugger to get on look if the ajustment screws for the hand brake arnt too long as this will pull the boot up too high and work it around to make sure its on fully good luck .

Yes, they are hard to get on....
and want to split at every chance they get.... :):)

You may have to put some flat washers under the adjusting nuts so that the threads aren't too long.....
or cut off the threads and You will have to hold the thread with pliers or Multigrips when adjusting the hand brake...

Nothing is Impossible..... just a darn sight harder:):)

Best of Luck...

Thanks guys. My biggest problem is I haven't really looked at one when it was on a car properly so I have been guessing at what it is supposed to look like when fitted.
