Beetle - back to the future

Psychobugger dropped the beetle off this morning.. Good solid car but a little shabby on the inside.. With nothing better to do (yeah right) , I thought I'd make a start.. First thing was to clean out a lot of gunk and shit from the inside floor pan and seal it up with some underseal.. Did this 20+ years ago.. should be a piece of cake..

I think this stuff is great.. Reduces noise and gives you a good start on an interior tidy up..

It's a solid wee beastie.. Just needs a good tidy.. New carpet's, hoodlining..
Polish the body and she will do fine for 6 months or so..

I'll get the brand off the can and let you know..
Scrap, wire brush, disc, anything to remove all the crap from the pan.. If you have minimal surface rust, get it as clean as you can and maybe treat the metal before putting on the underseal

Funny.. Yesterday, I decided to repair the damage to the front guard and remove a tiny rust patch down low on the side panel.. I spent freakin ages, hammering and pulling the guard.. Drilled the screws, levered it out, smoothed it with three coats of putty, sanding back in between, primed two or three times, 1200 grit wet and dry.. looked beautiful.. Just as I finished, my darling wife came out to see why I hadn't installed her new dishwasher.. Distracted me for a sec and I leaned against the repair section, forgeting I had a pocket full of knives, screwdrivers etc.. Anycase, scored and gouged the living f@#k out of my newly completed work..

Now I have a painted guard with a few blemishes.. I ran out of time to fix it again.. You've got to laugh..

Thought I'd keep at the beetle after work today.. Just finished (2400h)..
Picked up the trim sections from Clifford Powell (Alexandria) and also a decent piece of 5mm rubber mat from Grippy Rubber in Rydlemere.. Now I know I could have bought a full kit (probably for a similar price) but I like to choose the type of interior quality I use.. And I love heavy rubber (don't read anything into that!!!.

And this is the progress so far.. Remember.. this is a low budget tidy up.. not a restoration so the strategy is to get on the road, a good, tidy, honest runner.. I hate clapped out interiors so this is worth a bit of effort.. Budget ($250.00) with a huge amount of rubber left to do kick panels and front nose compartment etc..

Good work so far.

What about the name of the rust stuffisss.

ALso, got same thing with guard, but onthe other side.....I swear, the cars are sisters.

I am lucky enough to have all originals rubbers for floor, with no tears in them (wait until the kids get near them though!)

Cheers

Motospray Brush On Sound Deadener

Any mastic type undersealer will probably do (rubberised)

Kids! You need a Kombi!

Is there a trick to putting on the sound deadener? or do you just paint it on like a house paint?

Paint it on.. Just do the normal surface prep as you would with any paint on application.. Don't be scared to pile it on. 1-2 coats.. Will take a day or two to dry completely dependant on thickness

Didn't get to do much today.. I did replace the engine lid with one I bought off Ebay (Thanks Crazy George!)

Looks a whole lot better with the right lid.. Slightly modified around the plate..

I fitted these aftermarket mirrors (mainly to cover drill holes from a previous fitting).. They look cute but are a little low.. I'm on the look out for a better set..
