What the

Just removed all the carpet from the inside of my sbug. Found that there is a broken spring on the brake peddle shaft, what does it do and is it needed. Also opened the viewing plate at the rear of the center tunnel and saw a bit of fencing wire wrapped around the gear shift rod at the conection of another rod, is this the norm or is it time to have a stiff drink and start to panic.

Scott,
The spring is a return spring for the brake pedal and is needed. The fencing wire loops through the grub screw on the gearshaft coupler and again is needed (you wouldn't want the shaft to part company whilst driving).

Thanks Brendan, The brake pedal seems to work fine but now I am worried, do you need an original spring or can you just get one from an automotive shop?

The spring has a flat extension on one end and a hook at the other (the hook goes around the brake pedal). Don't think you'll get one from an automotive shop. Original should be cheap.

Vintage VW
Mick Motors
Ben Durie
Stan Pobjoy
VW Performance
etc etc..
