type 4 tinware (76 kombi) - something missing?

Hi all,
While under the kombi last night (and where better to be on a Saturday night! :duh ) I noticed what looks like a missing cover in the tinware right in front of #1 cylinder head. The hole is about 5cm and slightly rectangular annd there are 2 M6 bolt holes - 1 on either side. What was supposed to be there? I'm thinking it needs to be covered asap as it must be wasting a lot of precious cooling airflow.
Cheers!
Toby
