Who has a matt/satin black car.
I have the week off after Easter so I'm going to paint my notch satin black. Im after some feed back on who has used what. I've heard the GMH guard
black is pretty good and cheap $60 per 4 lt. Obviously though paint suppliers try to talk you out of it and use a group 1 paint at 3 times the
price.
Any feedback appreciated.

Is Satin black that rough looking black (dull) colour.
Sorry for the stupid question.
Just need to buy some soon and was wondering what its real name is and if there is a paint code for it?

I thought people say Matt black shows up dints and stuff more?
Its funny how people all have different opinions on it :P
Oh also i Emailed (Septone) the big company that does paint supplies and other stuff and they told me GMH Black was a lacquar and it is only good for
inside boots etc?
But after seing your car it has come out how i want? Im guessing every GMH black is the same so maybe i will just go with that and a non gloss clear
coat or something?
Cheers,
Scott

That notch looks great.
After you painted did you still do any rubbing back, polishing, buffing etc?
Didi this cause any of the matt to turn shiny?
How did you finish it off?

Sanded body and fixed as many dents etc as I had patience for.
applied combination spray putty/primer, depends on how you thin it.
All in all applied 3 coats of primer sanding with 800 in between each coat.
Applied the GMH black thick coat first up and then gradually applied it thinner. Applied 3 coats in all.
Found you couldn't sand between coats as the paint balled up on the sand paper and left marks.
So applied all coats with no sanding between. probably a good thing in the end so it didn't 'gloss' to much.
Pretty happy with the final product just have to wait and see how durable it is.

You guys are mad, the only thing GMH black is good for in guide coat, if you park your car outside it will last less that six months, it will allow
moisture to penitrate through and cause the black to go orange from rust. Its the cheapest shityest paint you can buy, infact its hard to believe its
called paint, it has no UV absorbers in and you'll wash of more and more every time you put a sponge near it, don't evan bother rubbing it down to
800 grit. And as for paying $60.00 for 4 ltrs, well they saw you coming.
Have some respect for your rides guys

Due respect mate but it's not a matt it's a satin i've already washed it and the paint beads up on it better than a newly polished car..
If you read the rest of the post i was sick of having to rub it back to remove the surface rust.
This will ptotect it untill and if I decide to pay someone to do it properly.
Besides it's a daily driver and spends it days ouside getting covered in jet fuel.
Why don't YOU have respect for other peoples rides.

GMH black can sometimes be misunderstood
Sometimes cheap chassis black is called GMH black and that stuff is only good for guide coats and under wheelarches
Cheap flat black paint is exactly that. Cheap
You can buy quality brand paint PPG, Standox, Dulon etc. and get satin or matt black made up. They can make it up as satin, semigloss, flat as you
like, they just add more flattening base. It will seal as good as any other colour made from that range. I get semi gloss black made up quite often
and never have any issues, but I do get it mixed in a quality brand.
On another note a mate of mine painted his EH in flat black primer. Looks mean as. He knows and understands it wont last forever.

You just don't see where I'm coming from, matt black does look great, just do it right. Don't waste you time. And as far as respect for other
peoples rides, you have now idea where I'm coming from.
As far as if its matt or satin when was the last time you put a gloss meter on it to read the gloss level or should I loan you one.
At the end of the day you'll find out the hard way

Sorry I didn't see where you posted "sick of having to rub it back to remove the surface rust."
Even when I read it twice I didn't see it, and if you only rubbed it back and not to bare metal and not pretreat it, well you will see it again
shortly.
Do it right the first time and it will last.

Sorry LOWBUG your right, I said that on another post, but the original paint was that thin it used to suffer from surface rust which I used to sand
off every couple of months.
The roof looks like it had roof racks which collapsed and left some neat marks on the side curves of the roof. With this in mind and the fact I work
at an airforce base which is in a hail corridor and cars regularly get covered in jet fuel I'm not about to shell out for a pro paint job.
I like the matt/satin look so I decided to paint it black. Now I'm not a painter (although part of my course was aircraft painting) so I did some
research and was originally going to go for John Deere Blitz Black.
I was put off this because I was told nothing sticks to it and it's hard to remove.
I did take most of the roof back to bare metal and treated it with phosphoric acid.
At the end of the day if I have to put a coat of paint on it every 12 months I can live with that. I could have bought a laser or excel to drive to
work but I thought getting another vw back on the road was a far more attractive alternative.
If you don't like matt/satin black cars or rats or whatever, hey, thats fine with me, but when you say things like "Have some respect for your
rides guys" well save that for guys who baja ovals .
