What causes this ??? Puzzle of the year!!
[size=4]I rewired My Son's girlfriend's 1969 Baja around 2 years ago, and everything was fine for a while until they moved to another house
with a large backyard. Then the engine started running on after it was switched off... It didn't do it all the time, mostly with Kym driving and
she would run the car down the yard and switch off the ignition, but the engine wouldn't stop. What was happening - and still IS - If the brakes
are on and the engine is switched off - NO Problem.. Now can anyone guess what is causing that... apart from the stop lamps turning the engine OFF

Brake lights take a few Amps, when you turn the ignition off, there might be just enough current going through to keep the engine going, but the drain
of the brake lights will kill it, also check the wires carefully at the ignition switch, they could be touching slightly somewhere, best thing would
be use a voltmeter & check current at coil with engine on ignition on, engine running ignition off, & then keep voltmeter connected checking
what happens putting the brake lights & ignition off & on, Logical deduction by elimination is really all you can do.
If all else fails & blue 74L is correct you can turn it of in the front yard & then push it to the backyard |

check your timing and carb settings, also make quite sure that you don't have any air leaks in your intake. Can you hold the dipstick after a
long run? if you can't the engine is running too hot and the above thing must be redone. |

Has the solenoid shut of valve on the carby failed in the open position?
If it has, any hot spots inside the cylinders will cause any fuel present to ignite, keeping the car running. That's why VW put solenoids in the
sides of their carbies - with the higher head temps (compared to water cooled cars) hot spot pre-ignition is more common in aircooled VWs.

I agree with kombikim, assuming it's not a running on problem.
As the stoplights draw power from the ign sw, then if they are hot wired someother way, then standing on the brakes & turning the engine off will
not kill the motor. Does the motor stop when you release the brakes?
Do the brake lights light up when you step on the pedal when the eng is off & the ign is off too??

as to why it is driver dependent, when Kym drives she probably drives in a manner that either makes the engine hotter
or produces more carbon hot spots. (either slow and lugging or pedal to the metal (like my wife does ).

We all know VWs are affectionate cars - she obviously gives it more love than you guys do and it wants her to hang around a little longer...
Seriously, though, it actually sounds like an earthing problem. The brake lights can be raising a voltage somewhere that's enough to keep a hot
engine running - we all know how hard it is to stop one running. I'd also be checking out if she's running a bit hot, or if fuel is being
fed where it shouldn't (a missing check ball in the carb's pump circuit can cause this.)

Hi,
I am no mechanic, but it sounds like pre-ignition, which i think is caused by your distributor being set to far in advance. One of my parents old car
had a similar problem. (Does the car backfire going down hills etc.) if so I would check your timing.
