Speedo and murphy's law
I was getting ready for a nav run tonite, doing the usual once over, tires, oil, tools, fuses etc. Gave the car a wash and drove it back up the
driveway. as I was going up the speedo needle started bouncing. The herd a click and the speedo died. Thats cool pulled the spedo, and the cable came
straight out with a frayed end. Got new cable put it in, and the speedo, is still really bouncy. Any ideas? could it be the speedo itsself? wheres a
good place to get it overhauled in brisbane?
Murphy's law- Nav run tonite, Khanacross sunday and going to byron on mon!!!!! so now don't have a speedo!!!!!

Did you remember to put the little clip on the cable where it pokes through the wheel cap?
If the squared hole gets rounded or the cable is not fixed properly you'll get cable binding/jumping.
Does the cable have a nice smooth curve up into the car? Hard turns with cause the cable to bind.
A jumpy speedo is rarely caused by the speedo itself - it's usualll problem is a dry bearing which squeals, or with the 73+ speedos - the plastic
drive gear inside splits and the odo fails.

Didn't think about the dust cap getting a round hole, go and check it now. Its the second speedo cable I have done, no sharp curves or anything. |

Second speedo cable? Wow, I've driven VWs for more than 20 years and never ever replaced one.
One other trick - once you make sure the speedo cable clip is installed at the wheel hub, put a little dab of silastic on it. This will stop water
getting in behind it.

double checked that the cable wasn't spinning at the dust cap end, its all good there. so decided to pull the speedo out, used the old end of the
broken cable and the speedo seizes up every 4 or 5 revolutions. Can i overhaul this myself or should I get a shop to do it? |

Speedo
Had the same problem on my T3.
The square hole in the dust cap had worn
into a round one and the cable was thus not getting engaged.
New dust cap fixed the problem.

wouldnt worry about trying to fix a speedo. They are just about given away at swap meets.

Well it sure can't hurt to pull your speedo apart and have a look at the guts. It might just need a good clean with compressed air and some
sewing machine oil. Or something might have come loose.
If the gears are chewed up, yeah toss it away and get another. We were at the Bulli Volksday yesterday, and there were dozens of speedos available in
the swapmeet.
