Relocating Turbo on a EJ20T
Has anyone done a relocation or knows someone who has relocated the Turbo on a EJ20T.
I'm about to start my 71 Panel Van EJ20T project and knowing that the turbo and intercooler will foul the fuel tank and cover was looking to swing it
all around, remount the alternator and run the intercooler semi remotely.
Does anyone know if this has been done on anything?
The other option is to move the fuel tank foreward and use the old space for Turbo and Intercooler.
What are your thoughts?

People move turbos in jap cars all the time. Only need to make sure that all the oil lines still gravity drain, that all the vacuum / boost signal
hoses go back in the right places, and apart from that its just a matter of a new exhaust. I'd think you are on the right track - should be easier to
move the turbo than the fuel tank ?

Look at http://www.vwrx.com He has done exactly what you propose with a custom stainless
exhaust manifold and aftermarket chargecooler. Very neat! He puts his progress in the forum.

Thanks for the tip Rich. Great web site. I like the idea of keeping the configuration as stock as possible however it comes down to how much workand
money is involved.
Without the tank there would be plenty of room for Turbo and Intercooler. Moving the tank forward would improve weight balance and offset the heavier
engine. The downside is building the enclosure and losing the space inside the van. I'll have to think how much the relocation plumbing will cost
also.

Food for thought: Silicon turbo hose costs $10 PER INCH and stainless mandrel bends for turbo intake are $18 each. And that's not all you'll need...
You could blow $400 just in bits of pipe before you start work
I'd take real good, long, thoughtful look at how you could relocate or replace the fuel tank

I spoke to my Engineer yesterday and he was ok with fuel tank relocation forward as long as it was secure without a chance of cracking at a latter
date and also the breathing remained external as original.
As soon as I have the old engine out I will do some measurements.

Relocating the turbo would not difficult and you could reverse the manifold, then everything would be on the other side.
You can buy complete do it yourself plumbing hardware kits on ebay pretty cheap....There is a rigoli red wrx with all the plumbing the wrong way and
it has the radiator mounted under the scoop on the bonnet.
If you are running aftermarket ecu it would be alot easier as you get rid of so much of the stock ecu accessories and piping...makes for alot of
room.

Thanks Matt. I had a look at the Vanagon guy that did the EJ20T and relocated the turbo. Relocating the tank is starting to look attractive. Will
measure everything up tomorrow.
P.S. Got the motor home today.

Pulled the old engine yesterday and also the fuel tank to have a look. By removing the fuel tank shelf it gives me all the room I need. All I need to
do is make a new mount and cover for the tank forward of the engine hump and redirect the filler with a bent up dog leg.
