Mk2 Golf GTi
Hi guys,
I'm lookin to buy a watercooled VW with a budget of about $6k. Mk2 gti looks like a good option... I haven't had any experience with this generation
of Golfs. So if anybody could help me...
how well does the gti perform?
how is the cabin quality?
did the 1.8 come only in 8valve or 16valve also?
any comments or advice?

have a look on http://www.carsales.com.au search under private sellers specify GTI
there is about 3 for sale.
alternatively try http://www.vwwatercooled.org.au. there is one on there from
townsville.
the performance was slack on aussie delivered cars and we only got the 1.8 8 valve, unless u find an import.
from experience steer clear of the autos, the 5 speed in so much better

i thought that we might only have got the 8valve...
i wouldnt touch an auto in a small car like that, would be very slow i'd imagine.
i'm disappointed we didn't get the 16valve model. any places you know of that i could source an import? what are the chances of finding one...
so how does the 1.8 8 valve perform? do you have any specs? how many secs 0-100km ?
thanks for your help

try Brian at GTI Imports in sydney for importing stuff.
performance was not great as they only produced 77kw and dont perform under 3000rpm. but on the other hand have awesome brakes, close ratio box and a
beautiful car to own and drive

mk 2 prices seem ok i think as we only got about 300 of them.
if u can stretch ur budget pick up a mark 3 golf or vento.
far better car with heaps more features for around $10 000 or less. bought a mk3 vento with 120k on it for $9000

Far better car, but not more fun to drive. A Mk2 owns Mk3's for handling end of story.
The 8V is much maligned. The Australian ones are pretty slow (around 10-11 secs to 100kmh) but my 8V is a UK model, and while it only put out 82kw, it
is much, much faster (8.5 secs to 100kmh). At the moment, my 8V is capable of 7.5 sec 100kmh sprints with a cam and mild blueprinting.
With prices so low for Mk2's (expect 5-7.5K), you can easily make budget of less than 10K and bolt in a 2.0L 8V. That will make them get up and
boogie. Trust me. I own a Mk2 and a Vento, and the Vento is a breathless slug, and I have been told by my mechanic that mine is one of the faster 2.0
8V's around. It also wallows where the Mk2 handles awesomely.

Australian spec Mk2 GTI? Yeah, prolly about the same actually. There wouldnt be much in it. A euro spec 8V GTI would eat a Vento for breakfast several
times over. In fact, even a 16V Mk3 Golf would get owned by an 8V mk2 in euro spec.
I reckon the Vento might have the legs over 100kmh, though. Extra torque and streamlined shape makes it better up there...
