How hot is too hot?
OK guys, Ive got a brand new 1916 (built it myself he says proudly), engle 110 cam, 043 heads, twin dellorto 40mm carbs, custom quietpack exhaust.
All the tinware is there, and I have a doghouse cooler. I run heater boxes.
It runs at 100 deg or higher. On Sunday coming home from Bulli to Nowra I drove it at 60 mph (yes folks mph!) and it sat on 100 deg all the way,
except for some brief periods when it dropped to about 95 coming down Ousley and Mt Pleasant near Kiama. The ambient temp was 32 deg.
I have been playing with the jets and timing and the same engine used to run close to 120 deg on a REALLY hot day.
But with some timing tweaks and dropping the main jets to 130 I think I am heading in the right direction.
I am a bit surprised that it runs at that temp now as I used to have 140 main jets in and the logical thinking would be that a smaller main would make
it run hotter.
Anyway, I am encouraged to go down to 125 main jets to further improve the consumption. (With the 140 mains it was lousy). The pipe is still sooty
black.
Talk to me fellas. Let me know what you think. I value your input. Perhaps the Queensland guys who run around in the heat all the time might have
some valuable info.

I'd say that 120C is as hot as you'd want to go, I start getting worried around that mark, but that is for a racing application where I'm strapping
the hell out of the motor.

I'm running 140 mains in Del 40s with 36mm venturis on a 2110 with a 110 cam. Have a 96 plate cooler on it also. Oil temp gets to 85 at it's hottest
at 120 klmh. 9.0:1 compression with premium unleaded fuel.
What compression ratio do you have? Tried running premium unleaded? The higher octane will make your engine run cooler but with lower compression
engines won't make any more power.

My comp ratio is about 8.4 to 1. I always use Optimax.
I banged the 125 mains in it today and it goes like a scalded cat. Up to the rev limiter (4800 rpm) in all gears except top really easy. I dont now
know whether it is rich or lean.
When I got back from that little 15km run it was reading 100 or just under again. Ambient temp was 33 degrees.
I might be headed for an extra coller.

Hi bob, ill be dropping your seats down to rods today!
Id say leave your oil temp and oil cooling as separate issues. Get it on a dyno and get it set at about 12.5 to 12.8 A/F ratio under full power and
and they can also load it as a cruise and check those setting as well which should be leaner but still well on the safe side of 14.7. New cars sit
dead on 14.7 to 1 or leaner at cruise but i wouldnt recomend it for an oldie.
Then when you have a motor that you know is tuned at its optimum see what oil temps your running and address that as a separate issue.
Thats my 2cents worth anyway. Dyno tuning is worth the money for anycar IMO as it also saves the need to use public roads as testing grounds! Just ask
