V8 rebuild update
my v8 kombi has been off the road for too long now, chasing parts and odds and ends to rebuild it for a while now, thats the fun of having an old
model engine...
picking up my forged 20thou oversize 8.25:1 pistons with cast rings tuesday, and new gudgeon pins and rods, as well as big end bearings and all that
too,
havent gone with 10.5:1 compression as even with 98 octane it will still need additive octane booster so not to ping,
apparently the good old cast iron rings are the best for these engines as molygive up a lot earlier than cast, so i went for those,
will post photos of the gear and rebuild soon to show ya how everythiong is lookin,

8th June UPDATE
Just finished my mid semester exams so now i can get bak to the bus,
engine came out 2day, have stripped it to the naked block to be bored 20" by some guys in Winton rd, Joondalup,
turns out some guys at 'a rover' speciallist shop cand measure pistons if their life depended on it! they told me they were oversize pistons in it,
so i bought a set of 8 oversize Hypatechs, only to find that they were not guna fit in the BLOCK!!!!!
so now its a ground up, reground crank, main and big end rod bearings,
worst time to be doing this work tho, we are moving house at the moment so there is crap everywhere int her workshop now!!!
i fit all my new VDO gauges in the centre of the dash also, just underneath the head unit, new 'fully sik' tacho to haha, shood be accurate now
cant wait to drive it!!!
sorry bout late updates, exams n that eh

There must be a link there somewhere. If your going to replace the timing chain just cut it off with a grinder.....but there WILL be a link
somewhere......

The benefit would be that it was all new....otherwise no other benefit unless the one there was too stretched. I just assumed that if you were doing a
rebuild you might be replacing the chain..hence the grinder ...and i like grinders

block has been dropped off to be machined,
after inspection of the cam i found that it was f**t, as you can see by the picture showing chips out of the lobes, and then i also found that the cam
bearings were rooted also with huge chips out of the centre of them,
turns out that the timing chain doesnt have a link Mick H, but it was old and stretched so i grind it off anyway,
crank is fine thank god!
so im up again for big end bearings, main bearings, camshaft (which i wont be replacing with a stock grind), cam bearings, timing chain and gears,
plus a complete bottom end gasket kit.
could be worse i suppose...
here you can see the chipped lobes

crank and cam after i had taken it out,

cam before it came out

Kevo, I'm assuming that we're talking about a Rover V8 here....
Evidently (I haven't checked it out yet) the timing cover from a Commodore V6 (not the Alloytec) will fit on a P76/Rover V8 as they are bothed based
on the old Buick design. The advantage is that it is much shorter as it does not have a distributor drive and used CDI ignition instead.
I know it's only heresay, but it may be worth checking into.
I've also heard that Holden V8 EFI systems can be modified to fit the P76/Rover V8 and returns about 14l/100kms with significantly more Hp on a 4.4
litre.
I've got a couple of P76 4.4 litre V8's sitting around at home at the moment. One is going into my P76, and I've been eyeing the other off as a
possible repower for my kombi, so I'm watching your thread with interest.

hey cruzin, yer the cam timing gear i got fits leyland, buick and commodore blocks, becaust theyre all the same block i think haha,
i will have a look into the efi you mentioned, that could be interesting!
picked up all my cam gear up on saturday and have dropped it into the engine machineists to fit new cam bearings n that, got a mild street dynotech
cam, flowmaster gears with roller chain, apparently you dont have near as much wear in these as you do with stardard gearing,
and new lifters with bigger oil galleries than standard, these are a must with a new cam,
sorry bout the fuzzy photos, its off the camera on my fone...

new cam

yer cheers neil, i been thinking about what gearing ill run when i get a new gearbox, what has this one got in it?
given that the standard 2L has a final ratio of .83 (i think), i assume ill be better off with a final ratio of .65 or something around that mark, the
engine will have the torque for that,
but keep in mind... im still a student dude so i got bugger all cash, this is why its takin me so long to build this haha, so yer dont think ill be
buyin the box off ya too soon, how much u want for it anyway? what has it got in it
