hi guys need a little help can you's tell me what you's think of the 1200 motors if they are much good or should i wreck it and go something else

1200's are mighty old school now and in the real world, are much less than just 400cc smaller than a 1600.
They really are no more or less less reliable than anything else and the lack of power will shit you major time after a while.
Piston/liner kits are getting scarcer by the day and are usually more expensive than 1600 stuff.
For mine, id just fit a 1600 twin port, give it a set of decent pipes, a pair of carbs, a very mild cam, some decent electyronic ignition and a basic
freshen up.
You cant go wrong with that and will be rewarded with a smooth and reliable engine that will chug away for many years in the back of a Beetle.

That brings back some memories.
Pagey's first 1835 drag engine back in the late 80's had 1200 rods and a special Deano's 92mm boes kit that was to suit the 20mm 1200 Gudgeon
pin.
That thing went 95mph in 4th gear at the track with those rods and cast pistons@ 7000rpm
( 1.32 4th gear with 4.375 diff and 26" tyre)
I think you can still get a 83mm big bore kit that slips into the 40hp engine for 1385cc?

40hp are tough as old nails. put a pict 34 (small thoat) carby and you will have a happy & cheap little cruiser. old dp1600's like to crack between
the valves and plugs, so check them well if you go that way.
Customer service is not dead in Australia.

I'm still running a 1200 in my '63 bug - very happy with it.
Yeah, its not quick, but I have a company car for drag racing ...er... did I just say that out loud?
Seriously, I run my 1200 flat out on the freeway almost every time we go anywhere and it's still very happy after years of this type of use/abuse.
Along the flat I can easily do the speed limit (110km/h) on the freeway, but you can definatly feel the hills.

ive got a 1385 in my bug, and ive been down the coast in it. does 60kms up the moonbys the same as the 1800 74 camper
i reckon thats pritty good, dammm cheap to run too

I'm still running with my 40HP. It will sit on the freeway all day no porbelms (melb to syd in about 10 hours with only 2 stops) I got about
8.5-9L/100km... but it's true that major replacement parts are getting scarce...
...and Robert's ya father's brother...
