Jerky chug.
Just recently I've noticed that when I accelerate out of 1st and 2nd, the engine slows and chugs - making the whole car jerk. After a few chugs
she accelerates and then there's no problem.
The engine doesn't idle as smoothly as it did, either.
Would this be the tappets? A burnt valve? Points?
Where would I be without you guys!

Interesting you should post something like this, as I had a similar problem today.
This is what worked for me.
The 1300 was idling rough, chugging at low revs, picking up, but it also would break down at higher revs?
I looked at the electricals first.
The points, cap, rotor, plugs and leads all looked nearly new, so I assumed they were ok. The points condensor looked like it was still the original
one, so I went to get one. Repco didn't have one.
I had a spare dizzy on another Beetle, so I put the whole dizzy in, and it was EXACTLY the same.
I now know I have two bad or two good distributors.
I took the plugs out to clean them. Well they were perfectly clean anyway.
I thought I would try the coil from the other Beetle. When I took my old one off, it became apparent that it was not in good condition. It had eaten
away inside the end where the lead goes on. If this was not it, then I was goin gto attack the carby next.
Tried it, and YAY! a perfectly idling Beetle with a high revving smooth 1300.
Now I'm not saying this is what you have, but there can only be so many things that can go wrong.
Look at
Spark - points, timing, vac advance, condensor, cap, rotor, leads, plugs, coil and loose distributor shaft - worst case rbuild distributor
Fuel - carby blockage, float level, needle& seat - worst cases rebuild carby, replace fuel pump
Compression - Adjust all tappets, check compression - worst cases valves gone

That was very helpful.
Thanks Peter, I'm pretty sure my coil has had it. Could be wrong but that's my best bet.
Cheers.

Throw a GT40 on it, they last years and beetles love 'em - then if that's not it, check for a vacuum leak, it produced that effect on mine.
To check for the vacuum leak, spray WD40 or similar around the carb to manifold and manifold to head joints, possibly also around the vacuum pipe and
andvance unit on the dizzy. If this makes your idle go smooth, you've found the leak.
