Type 3 tacho... porsche substitute

Hi All,

I have been told that I can get a porsche VDO tacho to fit a type 3 dash.
It seems almost impossible to find a VW VDO tacho for a type 3 but I am having troble finding any information to support this porsche substitute theory.

Does anyone know if this is correct and if so, what porsche model will fit.
Or does anyone have a type 3 VDO tacho they would like to sale :)

Cheers
Lee

There are a number of tachos suitable for type 3s out there. The grey faced VDO ones cost an absolute mint, if you can even find one. Even the TT repros (which are very good) go for AUD350+ when they come up on ebay.

If you want details of all the tachos for a type 3, check out this site http://neil.us/type3/tach/.

Don't know about the porsche substitute, sorry.

I missed out on a 1968 square a few weeks back on ebay which had a VDO tacho installed.
I should I been more focused… :(
Thanks again

The Porsche tacho that you want is out of a 914/4. They come up on EBay all the time. I've got mine out of the car at the moment, and can measure it up, if you want.

I know it fits the speedo hole in a beetle.

has anyone got pics or can tell me how to ID a type 3 VDO tacho??
we got a few type 3 parts with Danielles old beetle, and found a VDO tacho that looks like it will be a good fit for the type 3 clock hole.

Hi,
The most comprehensive site for pictures of the Type 3 tachometer options anywhere is at: http://neil.us/type3/tach/  as per PurpleT3.
This site shows several different versions of the VDO Type 3 tachos. The commoner one in Australia is the Black face tacho made by VDO Australia and matches our 1972 + gauges. It reads to 6000 RPM, with the numbers 0- 6 printed on the clear plastic face, has a white needle and black bezel.
The T3 clock / tacho gauge diameter is 85mm so the Porsche Tachos of any model Don't fit, but with adjustment of the bezel the 914 tach will fit into early Type 1 ghias to replace the clock..
You can find several versions of the aftermarket Cockpit series VDO tacho which are still being made ( also black face and reads either 6000, 7000, 8000 or 10,000 RPM, and has a yellow needle and an adjustable red line pointer ) which is 80mm diameter and will fit, these come up on Ebay regularly. There are also a few other newer aftermarket VDO tachos which are about 85mm but they are also black faced.
I am still looking for an Original Type 3 grey VDO tachometer to buy after several years. Does anyone know if there are any in Australia ?? Cheers.
