1400cc piston and barrel kits

Hi all,

Just wondering if anyone knows if the 1400 piston and barrel kits are still available new (and if so, from where?).

These were the kits that were fitted to the 1200's as a slip-in upgrade.

I kinda need to do something ASAP as the 1200 engine in my '63 is making odd sounds and I don't want to risk driving to Warwick in a couple of weeks with an engine of suspicious quality :duh

Any info on the 1400 kits would be great!

If your engine is making odd sounds , Pistons and barrels May not solve the problem, It could be in the bottom end in fact there is more in the bottom end to make Odd sounds
Have someone check it out before you spend any money

Barrel is cracked too (does this surprise you?)

The suggestion has been made that I fit an engine of unknown history from another of my cars in order to make the trip to Warwick... something that I am not too keen to waste time trying - I would rather rebuild my 1200 into a 1400 using my late model (twin relief) 1200 case that is still in good condition and as many new parts as possible - I plan on driving this car to Melbourne later in the year, so it all has to be reliable as it is a long way to push it home if something goes wrong during this trip! :D

The big bore kits fora 1200 ( 1400 ) are no longer available unless you find a old stock one somewhere

The 1200 kits are also very hard to find now days

you might be better off finding a 1500 single port engine

Try Vintage in Sydney they may have a 1200 kit 02-9789-1777

the big bore kits for 40hp are still available in the US

I bought and fitted one a few weeks ago...
there was a limited run of them, but plenty around still.

Just checked with Vintage 4 U and they have the 1200 kits in stock

The Sambae 1400 kits sound good as well

The 1500 single port would be the cheapest and easiest

Persistance pays off

Hi all,

Well, after weeks of looking around and bugging my local parts supplier I finally taken possession of a set of brand new 1400 pistons and barrels sourced here in Australia!

So the 1400 rebuild is now underway... it will be interesting to see what sort of power increase I can extract from this engine with a little tickling here and there...

Hey Ratty
I'll be interested in how the rebuild is going. I've got a set of 1400 P'n'Cs that I wanna use on my 40HP engine, provided the lower end is all solid. It seems to be sounding like a Singer rather than a Volksy right now.. even though I have extractors and a hot dog muffler...

quick update

not much to report just yet....

I have dismantled my late 1200 engine (twin relief case) after a gudgon bush spun in the rod, blocking the oil holes - no major damage, but I caught it just in time :D

I have collected all the parts that I need to do the rebuild, but work, my trip to DOTVW07 in Melbourne and Christmas have put the rebuild on hold - I'm not interested in rushing the build as I really can't afford (time or money) to have to do it all again if something goes wrong. I'm hoping that a few days off during the Xmas and New Year period will allow me to make some headway.

I have however managed to begin repainting the tinware so that it will look decent.

I'll post updates as things happen....

Hi Guys,

Just a quick update on my engine build....

... er... well - it would seem that the rest of my life is getting in the way of this engine build - I have all the necessary bits to do the job, but a new house purchase (and subsequent move that goes along with a house purchase) plus a new baby have consumed all my engine building time so far.

On the positive side - the new house has a nice sized shed/workshop in the back yard - which still needs to be organised, however once this is done I will have heaps of room to work on my collection of cars - and the 1400 build will be the first thing to be completed.

Stay tuned and I'll let you know how it goes....

R :)
