time to convert to irs!!!


i touched on this when i first started the rebuild of the baja. Now i am going to do it, i have the shits with the camber of the rear so where do i start? what would be a better suited box bug kombi? just what will i need?

when i last asked there was someone who replied from Rockhampton who had a jig that offered me the use, dont supose they are still around?

Any links/site that have a break down of the way to go woudl be usefull to...

One thing i wanted to know, a lot of the boys in the uk are useing the splitty/trekker reduction hubs insted of the irs. i know going that route you gain massive low range but piss poor top end(they are getting around 55mph) is this a better way to go over IRS?


Any help will be great...

IRS is better. IRS with a kombi box will handle more power, kombi CV's give good angles and wheel travel.

reduction box still gives huge camber changes through the suspension travel. The main problem is it jacks up the suspension when you accelerate, and from what I've seen of them offroad they tend to suffer from axle tramp issues.

ok so i have 76 2.0injection kombi sitting at the workshop... i should have everything i need right?

mattie, wasnt sure if it was you that had it but glad it is, wnat to take a trip down to sunny old gladstone and help me out? i have NO idea on what way to approch this just know that it has to be done

any tips/help people can offer would be great at this point as i dont want my car off the road for to long as its my only transport right now....

at the moment, we are three weeks away from expecting No.1 bub, and Midlife Crisis has my jig at the moment


On another note, if you have the baja on the road, why havent you been this way offroading with us?????:duh

Stef what size rear tyres are you running as if their 31" or bigger you will want a 1600 3 rib kombi box not the 2lt box (6 rib) as the ratios in the 2lt box are much the same as your current beetle box and the only thing you will gain is strength and poor low off road ratios as first gear is quite tall.
The 1600 kombi box on the other hand has 5.4 diff and a quite low first gear and is pretty unbreakable depending on your power and to top it off i have a spare good 1600 box and am looking for a 2lt box so mabey we can do a deal as i could meet you in Gladstone some time and do the swap and give you some extra cash and as a sweetner i will through in my drive shafts, and sharpbuilt change over kit for a beetle chassis so the only thing youll need is a gearshift coupler which i can knock up also.

It depends on what engine and tyres your running, plus what type of offroading your doing. Darryl had a 1600 3-rib box with a 1915 in his manx and thought it was too low, I agreed when I drove it. I had a 1800 5-rib when I ran my 1915 in my Baja, and again I thought it was too low. The 2L with my V6 is fine.

When I had my 1835 and 1776 I had an early beetle swingaxle with the lower gearing, I found it to be good gearing for offroad. The 2L kombi is slightly lower than an early beetle box.

When I went to a later 3.88 Lbug box I found it a little tall offroad, but good on the highway.

There is a 1.39 and a 1.26 reduction box gearbox, one is basically the same gearing as a 3-rib, and the other nearly the same as a 5-rib.

i am running 30 by 9.5's as i was told that the 31's were to big to roadworthy on a bug. I am quite happy with them they seem to be holding up well and give a good amount of grip so i dont think i will change any time soon..

the engine i am running is a type 3 thats been taken out to a 1776 with low down power in mind not top end.

Andrew i mite be very intrested in that, i will give you a call over the weekend if your about and have a yarn about it:thumb

Matt i only got it on the road about 2 months ago and as its taken 2 years to finish i wanted to make sure it was going to be reliable and any gremlins had worked there way out before i went on a trip of any distance. What with bub number 4 turning up to early and spending a heap of time in hospital along with other things it just hasn't happened yet.

Dont worry i will be joining you soon just have to do the irs first as the car gets a little scary over 80 with the camber i have but i will get there!

A 2L 6-rib gearbox with your tyres will equal 2800rpm at 100kph on the highway. 1000rpm in first will be 8.3kph.

A 3-rib 1600 gearbox will put you at 3070rpm at 100kph. 1000rpm in first will be 6.9kph.


The 2L will be much more pleasant on the highway, and quite good offroad too with the 1776.

Definetly stick with the 2L box!!!! A 1600 Kombi box is a downgrade...especially since you're not running huge rear tyres anyway...
