Info and some help with a 13B rotary in a 1500 bug.

I´ve read what threads are in this topic and done alot of thinking. What I want to do is drop a 13B in my other 1500 bug.

The main consideration for this project is that this car HAS to look stock on the outside, so when I pull up at the traffic lights and the leave the people who pull up next to you in the slip lane for dead.

The things that concern me is; with all the extra power; what path should i take to toughening up my transaxle apart from straightcut gears, stronger drive shafts and more than likely changing the ratios to deal with the higher reving engine?

As far as fitting the engine in that should fit in ok from what I´ve read. 1/2¨ clearance at the back.

What does however concern me is keeping the noise within the legal limits. Since rotary´s make a fair bit of noise; but I want to get the best power out of it as possible but still being legal. Thats where I like to put a turbo on since it acts as a bit of a muffler I remember seing somewhere. But the modifacation guidelines don´t allow this. Also since the exhaust gas is hotter I read that they burn out fibreglass muffler boxs very quickly at high revs.

Keeping things cool is my next question, Where does one put a radiator and oil cooler? Keep in mind I don´t want to cut the body up if I can help it. So at the back with a couple of thermo fans maybe?

I in Tasmania. So anyone who has dealt with engineer´s and registering the car in Tasmania I love to hear from you.

Thanks, Stevie

Good luck with the conversion project. I'm doing a Soobie one myself. One comment about rotaries. I did a lot of consulting work with a major police force about ten years back. The one time I saw these (senior) cops really arc up was when someone gave his rotary a rev. Their necks stiffened and their heads snapped around in the direction of the noise. At the time I was thinking of going either Subaru or Rotary. That single experience sealed it for me.

13b

from my own experiance 12a is as big as u can go legally in any state ive moved from nsw to qld and wat a shit fight. next thing because ur in cool weather 99% of the time u will need only a little scope under ur front bumper and place the radiator in the spare wheel well , the ruleing on a rotary is double the original compacity ie 12a is 1197cc or there abouts is now 2394cc just under power to weight for a 68 bug its bull shit how can a goverment change the capacity reading of motor if it had already been passed by them several years before bloody INDIAN GIVERS hope this helps let me know how it goes.

as bugzla said i dont think u will get it passed with a 13B in it as its considered being double the capacity !! i would talk to an engineer before doing anything be nothing worse then doing it all and not even being able to register it!! in saying that you could do a 12A up to put out just as much horsepower with the right mods!
cheers
rhys

it aint just cool its aircool'd
