T4 advice
Hi guys, I am looking at buying a 1994 transporter(T4 I think??) with 270K on the clock. Looks honest enough at this stage just needs a tidy up.
Manual box but has a leaky flange gasket by the sound of it. What should I be looking for and are they an expensive bus to fix?? He is asking 7k I am
thinking more like 5 and a half K max.. Any info greatly appreciated.. Cheers Steve

94 would be T4. Bear in mind that VWs, though more reliable than many, get old and tired. The price of parts often dont. Set of plug leads cost about
$110, so you decide if thats a lot ... you get what you pay for. I'd buy a good T3 for 7k instead.

2L or 2.5L
Dont think i would buy a 2L in that situation
A good 2.5L might be a different situation though

Buy a T3..
Stick to rear wheel drive.
Keep the steering and the propulsion seperate . Still a Kombi...
It's all good, until it's bad, i suppose

Thanks guys for all of the conmments etc
I was after the T4 for my business and wanted something that looked a little later model than the earlier T3. It is a 2.5 I think from memory as I
think I recall seeing it embossed on the rocker cover. Is the flange gasket hard to change, I cant see how I could get to it???
Cheers
Steve

I wouldnt be scared of the ks, they are great vans.
I reckon the 2L is heaps more reliable and cheaper to run and fix than the 2.5L. I see heaps of broken 5cylinder ones, but the 2Ls run forever.

Diesels are good and long lasting too, but more expensive.
The 5 cylinder petrol is the most delicate I reckon.

the 2ltrs are under powered, the 2.5's are a great motor vry few probs, the ignition modual situated behind pass side headlight suffers from water /
corrosion.
personally i'd go for a diesel, and i'd go for a 97on model, u can spot these by the vented drivers side wing/guard, they had suspension and trans
upgrades. i'd also steer clear of auto's a manual is easier to repair- you wont need a computer!!

I dont agree that the 2.5L has few problems. I have seen a lot more major engine problems with those vans than with the 2Ls.
I tow a car trailer with a 2L and it has plenty of torque.
