Advice needed - rust proofing
Looking for the best stuff to prevent rust in the interior of my kombi.
Have looked at fish oil and lanolin have been told that xtroll rust conqueror is the best to use. Goes on clear, penetrates and sets hard without a
smell.
Anyone used this stuff or have any advice on the the best stuff to use.

I've always used fish oil in my VWs, after grinding/painting to get rid of major obvious rust. But a mate of mine who is into 4WDs and fishing
hard-core swears by Lanitec (sp?) because it will just about keep fresh steel shiny even after being dipped in salt water
ther's a hundred products and a hundred opinions!

Yes,
I've always used good quality fish oil
and use a lot of coats..
pressure pack is easy to use...
the smell doesn't last long these days...
it used to last months back in the 60s..
Fish oil is also clear...
runs into cracks etc before it dries...
won't hurt anything...
the cheap fish oils don't do much... if anything..
but good quality fish oil has rust inhibitors in it...
its probably the cheapest option...
You can even paint over it later on...
recommended...

I have used all of the above however
no matter what you do you have to throughly clean the areas that you are spraying
use a vaccum first then a scraper with a bit of wire to remove any other junk oe left over upolestery then blow out with air also make sure
the drain holes are all clean and free other wise your just sealing the crap in there and creating more chance of rust if the water has no where
to sit then it wont rust
I have actually use the hose with running water to wash out the crap in the roof areas works well if the shell is off the chassis
I prefere Lanolin nowdays it comes in spray can trade name Lanotek you dont want a product that goes hard

Thanks for the tips. Had a quick look at lanotek on the net. Looks pretty good. Eco friendly which is always good. Kombi is 68 lowlight and a daily
driver. Can't afford full resto at the moment and I'm looking to keep it as rust free as possible until I've got the pennies saved.

...not convinced about lanolin ...was all the go around the slipway 3-4 years ago ...most have gone off it ...doesnt last /penetrate..(as with
fishoil)...mind you thats in the harshest environment ...Tectyl from Valvoline gets the thumbs up..

anybody else used tectyl from valvaline heard great stuff about it from customers has it got some sort of rust inhibitors with it as well?

had good results with their stuff, havn't tried the others for a long time though.

I use tectyl on all my buggies and I never wash em so it must work well as none of them have rusted away yet.

Just to throw this into the mix:
Have heard very good things about Metalfix, which can also be sprayed into cavities etc. There is a type that is designed for application onto already
rusted surfaces, and one for bare metal:

It's about $60 for a 1 litre tin delivered to your door. Exxy, but I know two people who swear by it.
