Ahh mate depending on how bad the box is think about importing one from Germany or the US of A.
Shit unless you have money to throw at cheaper to import; unless u are a quick learner and have a good mechanical aptitude.
Only just got myn running was cheaper to source both box and front diff with lockers from germany tyhan it was to have the box rebuilt in OZ.

cheers sosyncrogo. i think there are 2 of the metalic red syncros in aus, 99% were the white telstra vans. mines been in private hands all its life, i've got all the history exept the first bill of sale.
its a great van the first box ripped the crown n pinion to pieces i got another box and did the best i could with what i could.
if you want a really good site go to club80-90, then click on syncronaughts, theres sh*tloads of stuff there. if you look in garage my syncro's on show there

i'm havin a beer with ya mate!!

iwish thanks for the info , from my brief enquiries in the world of syncro I came up with the same thought ,no one here in aus seems to me (east coast) to be offering a professionally presented and operated rebuild service for the transaxle for these buses...
i have already got prices for importing from both us and europ
what is great about dealing over there also, is the greater choice of final drive ratios if you want to go that way ,as well there seems to be some standardized pricing
i have got quotes ,here in aus, of rebuilds for these in excess of 6k which to me seems to b stretching it a bit
OEM crown wheel & pinion sets are about AUD$1800 while Albins offer them for AUD$1000 with variants in fdr
thats the major componentary in the box for 1K , how anyone can then build that up to 6k on a stock rebuild is beyond me....
might be the last of the real black arts heyy...
where did you get your trans axle from...?how much if thats not rude ?
i will be pissed if you told me you did it in last 3 mnths cause i woulda got one as well

all the syncronaughts stuff is what i want to see as well , i have been checkin it out for a while now jon and i 'll go back and see if i can find your rig in there , I like the look of it .
the metallic orange 16" that is on one of the busman belgium links is a pretty tidy lookin machine if you have seen that
jon does your compliance plate say transporter 2 seater ..?I can see from photo that it is the full window I just wonder if some of the full windows we got in aus were complianced for more seating ..?
cheers guys

hi sosyncro, my compliance plate says "for 7 seats" make "VW" and the chassis/vin number,

i've only got 3 seats plus driver, and a double bed in the back, i origionally took the third row of seats out to fit a 100litre long range fuel tank! i guess i should have the compliance plate changed, or fit more seats??

Ok buddy. My project has been in the making for some time, money and time are the biggest factors in this quest .
I think i still have the actual import papers heres somewhere; anyway total cost for both box and front diff with lockers at both ends was around 4200 in my garage. Including freight taxes etc.
Yeh i see you going WTF, but hey i did myn over the period of 18months in between fixing others.
Sus ratios
Deal with White Knight International Freighting. These blokes know what they are doing the cart the WRC gear around. Tony Vinson i think in Brissi.
When u are purchasing from overseas i went German Ebay, you must make sure the sell er is happy to have the gearbox cleaned for import. Or at least willing to take it to someone to have it cleaned otherwise price goes up by about 1G.
Still cheaper than having it rebuilt here in OZ. I know shop locally but hey it's my money and if i can buy a fuel tank in the US for 170 + 100 freight i sure as heck aint paying 890 here in OZ. Off track sorry...
Stay away from GB as currency conversion is too much euros are closer to our dollar or even the USA.
Most times here in OZ its cheaper to buy a whole syncro for parts if u are that way inclined?
A lot of effort will save U thousands, do the hard yards, shit the only thing i havent done is actually put the boxes in otherwise i have done everything else myself.
It's a learning thing..
Get the right info as some people talk alot but have probably never actually worked on their syncros, this doesnt help.
Most of us on here have done the hard yards.

Shit i dont know everything about them but i am up to speed now...

Also worth joining the Yahoo groups list.

http://autos.groups.yahoo.com/group/Syncro_T3_Australia/

Les Harris who runs this is in the process of a rebuild following a pinion bearing failure. Be worth having a chat with him as he is using a local rebuilder.

my nomination is Rudi Purkhart.
He convinced me that my original box was up for about 10G so i started looking elsewhere. Never looked back, Oz just doesnt have the Syncro culture as other countries.
Buy yourself a bentley manual and look into whats involved... Then start running some numbers, Unless you can find someone who can do it for a carton or cost then it's big $$$$$$.....

GoodLuck

Sosyncrogo, no problem, Les is in Melbourne so i'm guessing his rebuilder is local so probably not much use to you. The syncro market in Aus is pretty small as Iwish suggests so there just isn't enough supply to bring the prices down.

Any good transmissiion specialist ought to be able to rebuild the box but it would be better to have someone who knows the Syncro. I think it is the pinion bearing that causes the most problems but you haven't said what yours is. It's only a gearbox at the end of the day.

If you could drop the box out yourself and then take it somewhere you'd save a lot of money, most garages wouldn't want a bus cluttering the pace up for weeks with no gearbox/engine in it.

Good luck and let us know how you get on.

Come to think of it my box was sounding a bit noisy this morning on my way to work. What sort of noise does a dodgy pinion bearing sound like?

Dodgy pinion =
whinning under pressure as well as hard shifting + more
Our daily driver 89 Caravelle GL manual 5spd, is really up the shit now i told the missus but you know how that is;
anyway now the box has a heap of slop in it as well as the whinning has gone i mean it is non existent, feels like a shift fork is missing it's so loose nil effort shoving it into reverse. In fact i dont think i need to push down and then engage reverse i will check.
Yeh gary dont forget you wil get some pto noise shouldnt be anything major but is normal...

I had Shimo, the gearbox wiz at Dunhams Autos in Wollongong rebuild my syncro box, it was noisey, it had a bad pinion bearing, needed a couple of other bearings and some syncros, I took just the box in and the cost was not bad at all.

The problem with a lot Aussie T3 owners is they drive there vans with noisey gearboxes until the pinion bearing falls apart, totally stuffing the crown wheel and pinion, damaging the rest of the gearbox and making repair costs too high.

As soon as you hear the gearbox getting noisey, get it out and get it fixed, it is much cheaper in the long run.

great responses ,now we are talking
rudi ....mmm I reckon he must be out to set the benchmark ,lets say the ceiling . he quoted me 9G on a standard rebuild so I must of struck him on a good day Iwish , I am doing the same as you
I will check out dunhams and les,
sounds good
does anyone know of or had any experience with the albins made crown and pinions they are $800 cheaper at $1000 then most quotes for OEM c&p
they are well known so I guess they are running around in some of the boxes out there..
no one seems to talk much about them.

The other option is use albins as they have a good rep with T3's.
Rudi is the syncro guru, i had him drop in on his way back from a meet down south somewhere, lovely people he and his family, Remember with myn everything was shithouse crown pinion spider gears everything...

Heya Dave how did u get onh with the sale???
Also are u willing to throw a dollar amount to the small rebuild; for the sake of conversation.
My only problem is time and money. The bloody caravelle only sits still when its fuel tank needs fixing, 2 x last 5months pin holes.
Oh and nearly all the monies were going to the syncro in order to get him registered so as to take the blue one off the road and get it fixed.
But the best part of that equastion is that the missus has since realised she dont really like driving the syncro, so he's all myn. woohooo..

sosyncrogo I looked into Albin's gears But as myn was a total loss except for the casing i really had no option.
Aftermarket is always better IMO as they have worked out the flaws, this is usually why they are aftermarket with larger dedicated mobs.
