Full flow oil system

Gday all... just trying to get some more info on what people have in the way of oil filtration. I think the time has come for me to install some sort of external filter. I am looking towards some sort of full flow system, what do people have? what do you suggest? where did you get it from? is it good??

thanks for all your replies in advance!

Hi, welcome to the forum.

I have a full flow oil filter, using a Berg pump cover and remote filter under the rear guard, this works fine.

I also have a filter pump on another engine I have, some people will tell you they heat the engine oil as the oil filter is in the hot air flow, I have not found this a problem.

If you have your engine apart go with the berg cover and drill and tap your case for the return, if your engine is running and you don't want to pull it down, get a filter pump, they can be installed with the engine in the car.

Hope this helps
Dave

I don't have any experience with them, but based on oil temperature alone (I know there are other factors involved such as surface area etc), I would have thought the warmer oil would flow through with less resistance, making the system more efficient. Yes? No?

I hope you're not talking about full flow for a type one. I just took a FF case to the tip 2 days ago!

And for those of you who are going to berrate me for doing that, I did post it for free about 3 months ago, so there!

Cheers

the vw system works very well
remember it was first created for
army use in cold or hot climates
fit a oil temp guage !
if you constantly drive hard and you see oil temps up around 120 then maybe fit external cooler. an external filter will not help you run cooler . the vw oil system works without a filter cause clean air goes in the engine make sure all your rubbers are in place

and change your oil regularly clean filter each time if you are worried

The vw oil cooler does do well but they were designed in Germany for the german climate. Do you really think the germans expected to see their humble people's car on American or Aussie roads in temps of 30+ degrees?. I think not. if you don't want to fit a cooler fine but think very carefully about filters.

the VW cooling system was adapted to wherever it was sold, from the deserts of africa in WWII to the freezing ice of antarctica. A properly setup and sealed cooling system will keep the oil and heads/cylinders cool in pretty much any weather when sensibly driven.

A full flow filter is a great addition as it adds life to the engine, and gives u some sort of insurance against oil system failure due to crap being in ur oil.

Make sure you use a good quality filter, as crap ones can blow on cold starts (thick oil = high pressure). A good brand is Mann, which is german.

I agree with Dave. Oil pumps with integral screw-on filters work fine; I had one on my Beetle for more than 15 years (Scat-made pump). It did not heat the oil at all. It required no external plumbing and lines to fit, and no drilling and tapping of the case. Very neat fit, and everything is up and out of the way.

The disadvantage is that the filter sits on its side and doesn't filter as efficiently as one mounted upright. Still a lot better than no filter at all though. The sideways mounting also makes oil changes messy. They take Z9-sized filters, but they are a tight fit. Smaller, less tall filters are available with the same thread and sealing surface size, but not as tall.

The other problem i know of with those integrated filters, otherwise i would fit one.... is that they dont fit with Extractors... if you know differently please let me know...

Mine fits with a Thunderbird extractor system.

But with some merged systems (that don't run heater boxes) the J pipes run closer to the case, that would be a problem with clearance
