Need halp - Starter Motor, Engine Swap

Hi,

I'm having some troubles with an engine swap. I have a 1966 beetle. I was told by the previous owner that he put a new gearbox in it and upgraded it to 12 volt. I have only had it running for a very short time.

I have now fitted (or my brother the mechanic has) a 1500 engine (number H 118 1058) which was recently overhauled. The gearbox (number AB 22 04 4) appears to be the original. The engine that was removed was an "F" series which I believe is a 1300.

We put the starter motor in and tried to turn the engine by hand to check things. It seems the flywheel is catching on the starter motor?

Anyone got any advice on this issue? Could I be trying to fit a 12 volt engine to a 6 volt gearbox?

Thanks

if it is a 6V box with a 12V flywheel then the flywheel will be fowling on the bell housing. You will need to remove it and clearance the arear it is hitting.

Pull the starter motor out to be sure, cause it is still grates then this is the issue.

Also have look at the engine you pulled out and see what flywheel it has on it.
