Better Brakes
Folks,
I have a 62 Beetle that I'm going to give a little bit of love, in the form of Disc Brakes. What I am looking for is a little advice on the pitfalls
of doing this with the kits from anyone that has done it on a fairly early Bug.
Should I be thinking about switching to type 3 drums on the rear .... is there a cheaper option than buying the kits from people such as VVWS.
At this point I am thinking that I will stay with the original stud pattern - cause my wheels are ok. Equally I suppose I am open to any ideas people
have about what else I should consider doing given I am going to have the car up and up to my arms in it.

You can do it, but they are not needed, if you have shit brakes a booster wont help, it will only make them easier to apply.

Steve is right if your brakes are stuffed a booster won't help. But if you have good hydraulics,hoses and shoes a VH44 booster will fit under the
L/H/F on the opposite side to the master cylinder,a vacuum line can be run under the car in the floor pan recess and then its a small matter of a
couple of hydraulic lines and a good bleed. I have used this system on several bugs over the years with great success. Les

I'm a bit torn about the pattern. Seems to me that for the price of front disks and a new set of Mags ( Say EMPI ) I could get a front and rear
disks in a holden / ford pattern. Then I could pretty easily pick up a set of mags of Ebay and have not spent much more but have greater overall
braking and better options going forward.
Thoughts ??

You also need to be REAL carefull about the centre hole
VWs have a need for a real big hole - if ya get my drift 
The centreing ring on the fronts and the large nuts on the rear may mean a bore job on the cheap wheels

the stuff off the older cars should accomadate this problem though shouldnt it? they used to have larger hub centre holes and had the larger offsets
as well, the 5 spoke rims the hq racers are running would be worth a look

The VH44 is an aftermarket booster which is fairly compact. We used to fit a lot of them to land rovers,holdens or anything that came with drum or
disc brakes that just needed a bit of assistance.The unit on the HR and X2 was a different unit (what we in the trade called a mongrel set up)
,although some were fitted with the VH44 at dealerships. I will try to post a couple of pics but not quite sure on procedure Regards Les
