Insurance, are Shannons the only ones?

Hi folks, i pick up my 68 beetle tomorrow and the only comprehensive insurance i can find is Shannons as it is going to be a daily driver driving about 20 000km a year. Nrma vintage insurance doesn't cover you if you do more than 9000km a year. Just car insurance will do 3rd party fire and thieft with any mods for $570. My car has a 1916 engine in it with different exhaust, wheels, seats and a tacho. Anyone have other suggestions?
Thanks
Michal

Shannons are the main player as they have setup especially for this kind of insurance.

The only other one I could suggest getting a quote from is Vigil. Do a Google search for 'vigil insurance' and see what information you can read about. More info will help you make your decision.

I dont think you can beat Shannons for convenience, flexibilitiy and value for money - I arranged insurance for my 69 bug through Shannons today - easy as , and HEAPS cheaper than anyone else . I also discovered that AAMI does not insure cars built prior to 1970, and they, AAMI, recommended Shannons... Shannons will also give you what I think they call "laid-up" coverage - applies if your car is going to be off line for an extended period such as respray, engine rebuild etc.. You just have to let them know when it starts and they reduce your premium while the car is off the road . (Shannons also have the option for pay by the month and you still pay the same amount but spread over 12 months)

Gosh I wish I had known about that this time last year before the family's other beetle went in for a make-over !!

Yes, Shannons are good, although i have My beetle with NRMA classic insurance...

I can't remember about having My car off the road for a few months... I think the insurance stopped until My car was back on the road?? can't really remember but My insurance is now due about 6 months after the rego...

If You are over 35 years old... prices drop dramatically..
You also need a good driving record... No speeding tickets etc... otherwise that hit You up for more money..
it also counts if you are insured for a few years...
so when you start out... its VERY Expensive...

You can change the insured value.. the higher it is the more you pay... My beetle is only insured for about half its value.. $5500 I could have insured for $11000..

cheers

LEE

I rang GIO yesterday and to cover mine for $6500 was going to cost $230 or $295 with salvage. I'll try Shannons today and Vigil if i find a number for them. Keep you posted.

Shannons pay by the month insurance has been the best and cheapest I can find, never had to make a claim so unsure of what they are like when you need them.

Shannons was alot more expensive than i thought it was going to be, $540 but my girlfriend is 28 so maybe that counted against her. Ended up going GIO for $295 with the salvage option. At least i have the car now, just got to get the brake lights going. I need to get the manual i think. Post the photos soon.

In NSW You need to get a green slip with Your Registration [third party insurance]
and it can be hundreds cheaper..
If Your car is Insured....

I have to remind them [NRMA] every year as NRMA classic insurance is seperate from ordinary NRMA insurance...

otherwise i'd be down a lot of money each year...

I suggest you actually go in and talk to Shannons - They will consider insuring you - even at 18! Prove to them that you are an "enthusiast" show that YOU are doing or are keenly involved with car restoration or mechanics etc - if you can do an advanced driver training course or car control course it helps build your experience points in your favour . My daughter - age -18 - Car - beetle - Insurer? SHANNONS.. You just have to talk to them.:tu:

Just keep in mind if they say do you have any speeding fines you say "no" even if you have they cant legally find out if you have any.

I'm sure I'm going to be attacked over saying that.

for all of you out there, i know shannons is good with classic cars but you should still shop around, shannons was nearly double the price with karmann ghias compared to who i am with, just a thought:)

did you declare that the car was modified? (wheels , motor and exhaust) most insurers will only cover factory options.

Shannons are good if you can tick all the good boxes...

under 25 X
no insurance before X
no no claim bonus X
no good driving history X

You really can't do anything about these things when you are 18...

but pay the money... a lot of money....

if You put the insurance in someone elses name...
until You are 25..
then You still don't have
- a no claim bonus -
or been insured before....
so no good insurance record...

although it should be cheaper when you are over 25...
may NOT be much more though....

Sorry I couldn't help..

LEE

Yeah i declared the 1916 engine, wheels, disc brakes, exhaust, seats and stereo. GIO had no problem with it. Shannons wanted alot more detail and it had to be garaged as well.

I'm with Shannons for the beetle and they cover my daily drive too.

I told them about everything on the beetle, lowered, suicide doors engineered, even the shaving of the handles. If i wreck the car they pay me and i get to keep the mess too.

I don't pay more that $350 per year. But I've got no fines in the past 7 years and I'm over 25, the car lives in a garage in a reasonable suburb.

Shannons really are case by case.

I've been with Shannons for years, since NRMA told me that wide wheels and a spots steering wheel was unreasonable.

I have all my cars, on and off the road insured (most off) and they have been great. They know all the mods and they know about my one speeding fine... per year... and it's still reasonable. For 1 bike and 2 cars in the garage and my 59 bug with a 1916 parked off street it costs me $34 per month. I must admit that I do have a full 60% no claim.

I wouldn't go anywhere else since the money and my experience when I have claimed is all good. That's my case anyway.

Oh, I drive the bug everyday and everywhere I go...

I would also recommend Shannons. I was with NRMA for about 20 years, then when my daughter ran my bug off the side of the Walcha mountain and I wanted to claim, I had about 3 months of angry phone calls to keep my car. It had a brand new 1916 in it (only about 1500km on it) and heaps of other goodies, all of which had been declared.

Once I got eventually got the car back and repaired it, I went with Shannons. I have had a few speeding fines, a biggish claim when I went up the back of a suzuki which drove it up the back of a commodore, and a windscreen claim. They have been fantastic at every move. We also had our Mk 3 VR6 golf with them, and now have the V5 Bora with them. I think we pay $116 per month, which is for both cars, but I reckon it is well worth it.
