63 Beetle Carpet + Interior

Hi All,

I've just picked up a 63 beetle. The original carpet had been removed and replaced with some orange carpet strips and there is a thick felt backing (10mm ish) under this.

I'm just wondering
a) Is this felt backing standard?
b) The car is turquoise, with brown/red seats, any idea's what the colour of the carpet may have been?

Hi nick_and

The only underfelt the early Beetle had was in the rear luggage area behind the rear seat. Under the floor mats they had a bitumen or cork material underlay. The original carpet would have been a red/brown colour as well.
The carpet originally covered the bulk head area, the two L & R heater channels, the rear cargo area and the hard-board on the back of the rear seat backrest. The floor mat was originally moulded in rubber and covered the front and rear floorpan and over the centre tunnel.

Cheers

Greg (ex- motor trimmer)

Hi Greg,

Thanks for your comments, thats great. I've never seen under the carpet of a bug so I'm flying a bit blind. I've removed the funny carpet that was left in the car.

Here's a fairly poor pic of the felt that's in the car at the moment. I'll post some more when I get a chance. Thanks nick

Hey Nick,

Thats cool, I'm thinking of doing something similar with another bug project of mine a 62/63 keeping mostly og paint (unfortunately brother in-law started to strip the old paint :fakesniff: )

Yours should look great with a tidy interior and original paint - I think some small dents are ok to leave they add to the cars character & history.

Just make sure you put plenty of new underfelt in the rear luggage area otherwise driving at motorway speeds will send you deaf!
