i cant get my fuel tank out...advice?
Hi all,
Im trying to get my fuel tank out of my 1960 Karmann so i can flush it but there's this painful arm that connects it to the car. The arm is held to
the tank by a pin that is near impossible to get off. Even if i do get it off i doubt ill get it back on. I thought of undoing the fuel valve nut
all together but it's so hard to turn im scared im going to round it out....Any suggestions?
Ive already put a little tear in the fabric line that runs from the tank to the copper hose that goes to the engine but that's no prob seeing i was
going to replace it any ways....
Gees the Bugme video looked so simple, but they never had this bloody arm holding it to the car i guess (it looks as though it has no purpose
anyway)....
any advice would be appreciated. Do i even have to take the tank out to flush it?

it is normally a split pin holding the fuel tap in from memory, otherwise undo the hose and pull the tank slowly up with the tap conected and it
should pull though the hole, it may bend a little but you can straighten it and then undo it when its out

yep it is a split pin. I never tried to pull the tank up to see if the pin would come out on its own. Been looking at this http://www.vw-resource.com/fuel_tank.html but it's never as easy as
they make out. Besides i think they're some how releasing it from under the car which i cant see how...Ill give it a shot...

take it out to flush.
the pin can be cut and later replaced with a newby.
the arm is your recerve tank lever,,,note the position so u dont put it back upside down.
replace the fuel line so a tear in it tells me.
maybe if u take one front wheel off u can access the pin better.
Scirocco mtrs is nr u, the lad had a show ghia like no others. the dad is a vw specialist if u need a kgmate wid rebuild knowhow and passion.
want any vw bits old but like me, Made in Germany!!!

oh hang on.... are you saying the tap connecting to the car should pull out of the hole where its connected to the car? then take the pin out after
its free?

yep, its a rough way of doing it but better than destroying the fuel tap, they are becoming scarce, watch you dont split where it screws to the tank

think of the angle of the tap when u pull on the tank...it should be smilar ......spray some wd40 /crc etc on the inside of car lever bit.

Hey guys...
GOT IT!!
i just cut the pin in the end with these hardened pliers used to cut steel boning for womens corsetry....Yup you guessed it, i make steel boned
corsets for a living. So glad this girly trade has finally come in handy for some real mans work
So is the idea of putting washed gravel in the tank and thrashing it about to loosen rust for real? Is that the way to flush and clean a tank?

nevva hoid that and would only use fine stuff caus the tap end also has a fine gauze cylinder shaped brass filter and it could break due to age
etc
clean and dry it pref wid compressed air and shne a torch inside to check anny flaking check outside for rust bubbles.
DONT use a match or lighter hay!!!

brake sucker to empty. wash with something before using compressed air... can be a bit dangerous.

i siphoned it earlier. Just use water to rince? My gasket between my tank gauge reader and tank broke from age. Can i find these around here any
where or do i need to order them online?
