Hi Dylan

That model bug were the poverty pack model, they were brought out to combat the Japanese invasion.

So they had 4 wheel drum brakes, swing axle rear end and a 1300cc twin port motor and a low ratio transmission.

The front brakes an motor are easily upgradable.

Standards are swingaxle so no, you can't put a L bug box in. You can put a 1500 box in if you don't like the short gears.
I love short gearing though. Makes you think you have more power

Pffft tall gears are for big lazy diesels. My car accelerates quicker than the old automatic VN commodore in 1st and 2nd.
To say it dies in 3rd and 4th would be an understatement though
Still wouldn't mind a taller 4th so its not revving its tits off on the highway.

look i like the sound of your style gear box, But sound like i would be better off getting a 1500 bug say a 69-72 and put in a 1300 box and L bug gaurds to make it a look a like 73 - standard 1300 bug.

think ur doing some chronic post whoring there young dylan

theres no reason to put in a 1300 box
as i doubt you'd be running a 1300 engine its a complete downgrade
a 1600 or bigger is only gonna run hot on the highway cos the revs are up abit, not majorly but something to think about, these engines dont need any reasons to run hotter than they already do
i take it you like elephants feet tail lights?

have a 74 standard that we picked up a few years ago and has since had a complete rebuild.
detailed thread can be found here..... http://forums.aussieveedubbers.com/viewtopic.php?tid=51542
basically it was an ok car when we got her... had some front end damage that hadn't been repaired correctly but other than that it was pretty rust free in the usual spots.
had drums on rear and discs on front.. 1300 motor.
we changed to discs on rear and upgraded motor with a p&b kit to 1640cc.
BRM mags and lowered.
they are around but it may take a while to track one down. took us 6 months to find this one.

see.... air and water do mix ;)
