69 Project - Complete!!
Picked up a 69 beetle project today for my daughter and need help in identifying engine size. Eng No - D1086665. Single port and using a 30 pict
carby. Any ideas? As far as I am aware it should be a 1500.
Cheers

Here tis.
Dont know much about it - I am assuming it is a stocko 1500. Had not been running since 2003, but with a litre of gas and a few pumps it started no
worries and even idlled fine.

Turns out my daughter is not too keen on the wheels so I was forced to put them on my Fasty.

Nice type 3 fastback
has the beetle engine got blanking plugs in the fan shroud
fresh air dusts??
I can't tell by the pic
the heads look like they have been hot
paint peeled off...
make sure there is nothing in the fan blades
My list shows D1,000,001 to D1,115,873 1973 model
and all D are 1200cc engines ??
Very strange ??

Thanks Lee. The chassis no, is 119 890974. According to the idiot book the engine no should begin with H 5 _ _ _ _ _ _ _. Are the barrels on a 1200
shorter? Is there any other way of checking what cc i have back there? No it doesnt have blanking plugs. Not sure if it has been hot though. Seems
to run fine.
Cheers

Gday Paul, measures 51cm so guess it must be a 1200. Not a worry as it will be my daughters ride, jiust good to know for spares and such.

its hard to tell for sure cos of the photo angle but the bend of the inlet manifold going into the head also suggests 40hp but like most of the vws
around its prob been fitted with 1600cc pistons or the bigbore 1400 that were availble for 40hp
thats not a 40hp carb which is the first clue that this is prob the case
the D prefix is 1200 but theres to many digits after
the tinware is a mish mash of colours id say the cylinder tin is just painted with ordinary spray paint which is why its peeled from heat
u also need to get that fuel filter out of the engine bay ideally under the fuel tank or next to the gearbox

Hi
The generator is fitted 90 degrees out as well, the wire should point off to the right. Looks like a good project. So if your daughter doesn't want
those wheels what wheels does she like?

Steve lets just say she didnt like the wheels as much as me. I will probably put them back on the beetle when finished. Painting it Yukon yellow -
very pale yellow, so the rivieras should finish it off nicely. The Fasty will go back to old man hubcaps and beauty rings.
As for the motor, the engine no is D1 086 665. More research indicates it is a 1200 from around 1972. The carby is the incorrect model for this size
motor i think. Should still be ok though? And the filter will be relocated later. You are right about the cylinder tin - just ordinary paint.
Onto the interior - has anyone purchased the carpet kits from ClassicVW? Just checking on quality and fit. Does the oatmeal colour look any good? If
so, would it match up with the two tone door cards - cream/tan and the exterior yellow colour?
Happy trails
Dave

Are the 1200s a good little donk? It has a couple of the usual oil leaks so I will probably pull it out and fix these while the paint is going on.
Thing is I can get my hands on a good 1600TP for a few extra $$$. Tossing up whether to go this way or just keep the 1200.

Making some progress with the bug. Have cut out all rust areas and welded in steel sections. Just checking on panel fit before it goes to paint, It
has 4 new guards and new front and rear aprons. Has anyone fitted a rear apron section? See pic of engine above. Is it a weld in section or does it
just bolt up using the rear guard bolts(it has slotted cut outs to suit)? Also the guards dont appear to be a neat fit onto the shell, but have not
had a chance to have a close look yet. Will post some progress pics soon.
Cheers

Some progress pics. Bit scary cutting out the A pillar and bottom of guard for as a first tme rust repair but happy with the end result. The rust
repair panels make alot easier. Have also cut out a couple of smaller rust areas. I have all new guards and front and rear aprons, so nearly ready for
paint. I have a pair of rust free straight doors from a later model so I need to fill the strip holes as they are higher on than the 69 model. Whats
the best way to do this? Weld them up or just use filler?
Cheers
