Roll Cages
G'day fellas
I want to eventually put a rollcage into my bug, and wanted to see what you guys had, and whether or not it is race legal, and what is required and
maybe how much.
Cheers
Shaun

Getting something that both meets CAMS and RTA requirements can be tricky.... my suggestion is talk to both a CAMS senior scruit and an RTA approved
engineer before you do anything.
Had my cage built by a Qld Transport engineer who also does CAMS certifying - wasn't the cheapest way to go, but am happier that it's right when my
life may one day depend on it.

I would order the CAMS manual, this will give you a good idea of what is generally accepted, plus it's loaded with ads for cage builders so you'll
be bound to find one in your area.

The link posted above gives you *exact* specs for what *must* be constructed for acceptance by CAMS

Nope - two totally different systems - CAMS only covers racing, while RTA only covers road registration and only in NSW.
Getting something that's good for both is do-able, but can be tricky... some things that are great for CAMS can be a big problem for RTA, like
positioning the door bars halfway up the doorway for example.
That's why I think you should talk to both certifiers before doing anything... make sure both will be prepared to sign off on what you're going to
do.

As sides says its best to find someone that you know (ie talk to other people with cages) have had their cages built, log booked and also blue plates
(RTA approval in qld).
Having had a few crashes, i know the value of a good cage. There are some good builders going around in qld at the moment. But the one who did sides
is probably the guru on cages in qld. Though I have seen a recent cage by GSL rallysport for the excel series done the by the old cage builder from
888 racing. and it looks sweet. The main issue in qld at least is the door bars. Some ppl say you must have removable ones, others say you must not
cover more than 30% of the door opening. I have seen both approved by Qld Transport. It also depends on who you get to blue plate the car........
But you also have to ask yourself what you will be doing with the car. If its just the odd drag race or lapsprint in a 1600cc beetle (ie driving down
well lined and protected roads) and use on the road allot, you probably don't need the same extent or strength as a EVO 9 at a rally doing 180km/hr
with trees only 2 feet away and never driven on the street.
I have no sympathy for my car, only the wallet that pays for it!
Go hard or go home!!!!
