Any good substitutes for sound deadening?
Been looking into sound deadening material...not exactly cheap is it!?
I was wondering if anyone's used anything else that might be worth a go?
A while ago i chucked out a massive roll of tar stuff on a foil backing although i'm thinking in the summer that might have been a bad idea!
Would rubber carpet underlay be any good?

This is only my experience but the expensive stuff works really well. I am sure some cheaper materials work fine but you do get what you pay for.
Resto wise a few hundred $ in sound deadening is not really worth pissing about.
On the flip side if you just want to quiet down your ride those cheap yoga mats or camping mattress work ok. glue it to the floor under carpet and
same on the parcel shelf and rear firewall. All depends on your budget I guess.

In Brisbane I went to Reverse Garbage and got some foam off-cuts. It was from professional sound system builders or someone like that. Had foil on
one side and an adhesive on the other (with a peel off layer). It has been GREAT to do my Van with. Doors sound great when they close. It has
helped reduce noise - though I should finish the job I suppose.
The foam is about 15-18mm thick.

Some great advice there. Thanks for that everyone
I'm mainly trying to cut down the engine noise. I seem to have no firewall behind the engine, so that's a good start i guess!
After that i'll start insulating the inside, behind the rear seats etc

You can always try roof flashing from a hardware store. It's heavy, has the foil backing, adhesive and can be moulded like Dynomat but on the down
side only comes in limited widths but could work out a lot cheaper in the long run
